I can't continue after the first objective: my only option after triss says we have to decompress the statue is to say "later" and leave.

I had this problem with her and ended up going off and doing a few other quests and exploring etc. Then went back and progressed the story with her and she then did it for me.

You should normally have two opportunities to do these quests: after completing Count Reuven's Treasure until A Matter of Life and Death is started, and then later after Blindingly Obvious before completing Final Preparations. If the statuette quests do not work then, or you can begin them at the wrong time (e.g. during another quest), then you may have found a bug. Which would not be very surprising, since these quests have been problematic since the game was released.
