cant get GPU usage up to 100%
Specs:
RTX 3070
Ryzen 7 3700X
16GB RAM

Settings: uber+, no RT

DirectX 12:
In Oxenfurt, fps 30-50 depending on where and what im looking at, while GPU usage is around 50%
DirectX 11: a bit better, up to around 80% usage and better fps too, by maybe around 10 on average

I tried to tweak Nvidia settings to force max performance etc, but it doesnt seem to change anything. Tried it with and without MSI Afterburner, doesnt seem to matter either.

Funny thing is, when im using my default Afterburner settings, which is 950V undervoltage, Directx 11 uses it properly, but DirectX 12 shows weird 712V.
Which suggests to me, overall DirectX 12 is badly utilised on my PC.

Im not even concerned about low fps, but more so about low GPU usage and im wondering if there are people with similar problem

I'm really hoping those voltages are typos and you're missing a decimal separator there somewhere.
sajmon Jan 10, 2023 @ 5:34pm
yeah i meant core voltage 0.950 and 0.712 ;)

To answer your question, most people have it, it's not just you.

What does you cpu usage stats say? The DX12 version seems to be very CPU heavy which might cause the game to be cpu bound. That could be the explanation for your low GPU utilization.
Dr.Abscondus Jan 11, 2023 @ 11:49am
The Ryzen 7 3700x is too slow to max out the 3070. The GPU has to wait for the CPU to finish the task it's working on which is then passed over to it. It will never reach 100% with that old CPU. Yes, 4 years old is old in terms of performance.

Force your resolution in nvidia panel to 2k or 4k and your gpu will be 98-99%

There is a video about this, everyone has this issue

after like 30-60 minutes of playing the game it either crashes or I just have 10 - 12 fps with huge drops then I restart it anyway.

I have a separate thread about a similar issue. According to the reactions I've read I'd wager something about the game(update?) and afterburner don't mix well.
Recheck your settings or create a completely new profile while the game is running and see if it fixes it. And yes I also undervolted my card, but for me the game FPS were probably more like 10-20 (unplayable) and the GPU clock stayed round 500.
In the end I found out that my afterburner is somehow set to just throttle power to some 32%. Interesting fact being that it worked in menus and I just adjusted that afterburner setting, checked my voltage curve (unchanged) and it started running like a charm. Full RT on. Important part is I don't remember ever setting the throttle on (why would I when I have a voltage/clock curve setup???) and never had a reason to do so and the game and other also happily ignored this setting.

Most likely answer right here, but everyone chooses to ignore it.

The game pretty much only hits 2 cores/threads so speed really matters, especially in open world games where the cpu has a heck of a lot stuff to process.

Try overclocking your cpu and memory a bit, it'll likely help, though you are very limited with the AMD side of things.

Hopefully you have 3600MHz ram to atleast give the processor its best chance.

Mine is at 100%. ive also tried to launch without afterburner and on default profile too, not much of a difference from what i could tell.

HWinfo says otherwise, first 4 or 5 cores were used up to maximum of 99% (i dont remember averages, but much lower), the rest 70 and less (maximum), which gave average 40-50% usage shown on overlay.
I dont think im bottle necked by cpu, but even if i in fact am, its game's optimization problem - its the only one acting like this and looks like other people with better rigs than mine have similar problems too.

Anyway i moved on to 1.31 with mods. My last playthrough was 5 years ago and never with mods, so ill do that. Visuals look on par to me, much better performance and W3EE overhaul mod will provide new gameplay mechanics :)

Its the developers job to optimize the game improve the performance.
Saoghal Jan 13, 2023 @ 8:34pm
It's indeed weirdly optimised. I've sent my own game at 30FPS + Vsync Half Refresh Rate to give a bit of a chance to my GPU, but I realised today how in Oxenfurt I'll sometimes go to 28FPS even tho my CPU load is not that high and that my GPU average 55-60% and thus that there's still headroom! I really hope we get a good patch or fix 'soon'; there's nothing else since Dec 22nd!
