Why do the Witch Hunters attack Geralt with no provocation?

So there I am, just walking through Novigrad, minding my own business, when a group of Witch Hunters decides to attack me, even though I did not speak to any of them nor did I draw a weapon or use a Sign. This is after Triss and I laid waste to their HQ and killed their commander, but I've walked past thousands of Witch Hunters since then and haven't been assaulted by any of them.

This was in Novigrad, in the large open square just south of Passiflora and east of St. Gregory's Bridge. It was the middle of the day, nice sunny weather. What set these guys off?

Because they are witch hunters and Geralt is associated with witches, simple as that. Even simpler: because Geralt is "a freak" for common folks and as such fair game for witch hunters who burn witches first but will soon burn elves and dwarves because they are different.

At the end of the day, there might not be black or asians in the world of Witcher but it clearly is a world where racism is rampant.

Maybe it‘s that group that attacks you because you were talking smack about that one priest who dissed witchers during his speech. He send a group of them after you.

Is that true? Are you guessing (perfectly fine if you are) or do you know for a fact that this has been programmed into the game?

That explains it, then - I had a hunch that it might be something like that, since the game has any number of 'sleeper' events that can lie dormant and unsuspected until Geralt stumbles across them in the course of doing something else. I just couldn't remember anything specific vis-a-vis the Witch Hunters that would have brought it on.
