VRR/G-Sync Not Working in Some Cases?
CPU: i7-10700KF
GPU: RTX 3090 Ti
32 GB DDR4 @ 3600
2TB 970 Evo M2

With DLSS Quality mode and Ultra RT settings at 4k, my framerate is hovering in the 40-50s, but it looks extremely choppy. When I set the internal framerate limiter to 30, it looks considerably smoother.

This prompted me to check the overlay on my LG OLED to see whether G-Sync was actually working. The LG Game Mode overlay indicated that G-Sync was on, but that the FPS was a static 119, the max of the display. This suggests VRR/G-Sync is not working on my display. When I play other games, I see the FPS in the display overlay match up with the in game FPS counter or whatever other PC based FPS counter I'm using, suggesting that VRR is working as expected.

I don't know if this is display specific or an issue with how the game itself handles VRR. I'd be curious to see comments from folks with G-Sync, Freesync, or other VRR capable monitors to see if they are experiencing the same issue.

On a lark, I enabled the framerate limiter in the Nvidia control panel. Initially, I set it to 120fps. Interestingly, this caused the FPS counter on my display to start functioning, although it didn't match the FPS I was seeing in the Nvidia overlay. It also didn't alleviate the choppy appearance (I assume this is a framepacing issue) I was experiencing.

Since I was generally hovering above 40fps, I decided to try setting the control panel limiter at 40. This seems pretty effective. It's noticeably smoother than using the 30fps internal limiter. Fluctuations below 40fps are unpleasant, though.

It seems to me that VRR simply isn't working (at least on my hardware combination), or isn't working well enough to provide meaningful results. But setting a fixed framerate limit with an external tool might be a workaround if you are in a similar situation and can stomach 40fps.

Enable G-Sync for Fullscreen and windowed applications. Force Vsync in the Nvidia control panel and disable Vsync in-game.
