Do not remove d3d11tod3d12.dll to fix overlays
Do not add me or message me in DMs over this thread, I don't care how mad you are about this post or the Witcher 3 update

I advise not removing a core file because the engine is built in a way to use a wrapper, removing these files will break core engine functions, regardless of if you think they work because you can click some options in a menu or think you see RT reflections when they are clearly SSR from 2015.

Wait for the patch, but deleting core files will not fix the current issues

Thanks for the info! I deleted the file and made the overlays work but as you just said, it broke other things. :(

I see this popping up a bunch now, while it may fix Steam overlay, you will lose modern rendering like DXR and RTX functions. You might as well just run the engine on D3D11 mode as you will have less overhead with basically the same rendering.

Wait for a patch, this does not give you RT functionality or work as people think. What you are dealing with here is a wrapper function that allows an older engine to run newer functions, without those instructions you are just shooting yourself in the foot under perceived functionality.

i'm getting RT functionality in DX12 after removing it.

yeah i think its anyway working, but i mean its developers issue anyway

they just bunch of clowns, any modder for witcher 3 do a better job for optimization and overaly anyway this days compare to cd project red
RT does work, stop spreading the misinfo if you have no clue what you are talking about. You can also back up those two files if you are afraid. Spoiler: you won’t lose any RT feature

I had the same, just because the options appear in your menu does not mean they are actually activated.

As per the above reflections, that is screen spaced not RT. SSR extends just beyond what is in the rendering zone, pretty standard.

Fair enough, i didnt do extensive testing beyond 'does overlays work after trying this? do other functions still show up in options? does it load into game? Yes, yes, yes, cool." and that was it.

the option of removing that file as a fix to the overlay problem was mentioned in a thread nearly immediately after unlock and was the only option that didnt involve installing GFE that worked, the thread and answer got buried in the noise of new threads, i started giving it out as a solution. I did mention a couple times it is a dx11to12 wrapper when asked, no one seemed to report anything majorly broken back. will stop advising though.
I thought the same thing, that it would be a stupid idea deleting that, but I tried it anyways (well moved it not deleted it) so I can take screenshots in steam, however the photomode is broken as things in far distances sometimes disappear or lower in quality (lower LOD models) as soon as you enter photomode so I'm just gonna put the file back to be safe since not taking screenshots. Ray tracing seemed to still work fine when I had removed the file though, fps would change dramatically as well when enabling and disabling rtx features and the lighting was noticeably different. So I'm sure the file is used for something, but doesn't seem to affect the ray tracing.

I'm not saying it affects the RT I'm saying it's affecting the game, including probably mods, that might or might not include visual overhauls, from better models, vegetation etc. so don't do it, or be more critical in what you see. also don't save becaus this might be a big issue in the near future.

Yeah I didn't really go many places or save the game so I could've missed something whatever it does. I was just trying to take a screenshot but that's broken anyways so I put the file back. I'm heading to bed now, it's 3am for me.

hmm I dont have d3d11tod3d12.dll O.o
Red Eagle LXIX Dec 14, 2022 @ 12:09am
OP clearly does not even know what the file does.

I mean, this basically confirms he does. You are essentially removing the ability for engine components to access the DX11 API (things that weren't converted to DX12) from doing so. while RT does continue to appear to work, my fps seemed worse and photomode was broken.

Proper file name is d3d11on12.dll

When condensing the post with the info for the fix that i got the info from I was trying to recall the file name from memory instead of just pulling the file back up and figured i got it close enough that i didnt need to bother updating it as most people got it anyway.

that said, its a dxwrapper that could do something important, or nothing at all. no one seems to know or if they do wont say.

According to him you are removing DX12 functionality and NOT seeing RT. That would not go through this DLL based on the text I linked from MSFT. Some basic DX11 items might go through that but not RT which is DX12 native. Further MSFT says it would NOT be performant at all. That alone shows he does not know what he is talking about.

Further one can use Xbox Game Bar FPS display without installing anything on Win 11 to See FPS as that still works without modifying the game. That will show no difference with the DLLs loaded or not and makes taking comparison screenshots and vids possible.
Xbox Game Bar Steps: Win G > Enable Performance Widget if not showing, Pin on Performance widget, Win+G to close Xbox Game Bar, there FPS in game, no game files modified.

EDIT:
Just to be clear, removing that file would not break DX12 functionality. It could potentially break any DX11 functionality that makes DX11 specific calls to the DX11onDX12 device (if the DLL is even being used). RT being DX12 is why the OPs claim is ludicrous.

Photomode works for me, and my FPS was unchanged. The only noticeable effect I had was the ability to use more overlay choices than the Xbox Game Bar (Since I don't have GFE installed).
