Horrible horse controlling.
Am I the only one who hates the horse riding in this game_ It feels clunky, your horse stops at random moments and it feels like you are driving a car. The jump is delayed and is mostly used for getting out of situations where you can move. 50 % of the time I have to go off the horse and then call for it so that it gets away from like a wall or something

I've played lots of games that had horses, and in many of them the controls were a nightmare (pun intended). Horse control in Witcher 3 may not be perfect, but I promise you, it's one of the better ones.

Roach is actually cleverer than you think - as you'll find out, if you play enough of Blood and Wine.

It is very finicky, I agree. The worst is when you apparently hit a tiny rock or stick on the road and Roach just comes to a halt.

Another thing that annoys me is that every time I open the menu while riding, upon resuming the game, Roach will halt as well - wouldn't it be possible to make this control a little smarter like assume that I wanna continue sprinting for maybe half a second and then stop if I haven't pressed down the sprint button yet.

Only tips I have is try to stay centered on whichever path or road you're on. Also, make sure that if you DON'T want Roach to auto-follow roads/paths while cantering or galloping that you just keep W pressed while steering with either A and D or moving your mouse to the left or to the right, as you would in every other game where you ride a horse.

The controls in this game are very stiff and clunky. Period.

When i approach Roach sometimes she runs away! Just like a real stupid horse. Amazing

Seems that there are different Roaches in different copies of the game. Confusing.

I think our Geralts and their horses are on the bright side of Witcher-life.

May the odds be ever in their favor.

Very true OP, the worst being the edge of a stone bridge you're approaching, though adequately smooth, stopping Roach dead in his tracks.

I find if I take the animal trainer's approach of rewarding vs punishing, it makes it go smoother. I often commend Roach for getting to me in short amount of time when I whistle for him, because I know it's really the devs whom are dumb, not him, when he doesn't.

At those times when he takes his sweet time negotiating a simple gap in a fence, or a slight slope on a hill, I'll say "That's OK Roach, it's not your fault". I think he's quite happy now that I won him a Superior Racing Saddle from the general. Now I just have to find that 100 capacity set of saddlebags and he'll be golden.

I actually do ride horses and I find the horse in this game fairly realistic in some ways. Theres always a bit of a delay to get a real horse to do things and its not as responsive as a lot of arcade games make horses out to be.

Roach is a girl...

I take it that none of the people complaining have ever tried to ride a real horse, particularly across rough country. A horse is a living creature, with a mind of its own. It won't always do what you want it to.

I find it laughable that the OP complained that horse riding in the game was "like driving a car", and then went on to complain about his experiences where horse riding -wasn't- like driving a car.

All in all, I think the developers have done a pretty good simulation.

I hink it's quite alright.
In fact, horses control very similarly in almost every game they appear in terms of the stiffness mentioned

All people are using the arguement that its realistic. Now I have ridden a few horses in my life. Im a man of the country etc. So I know how horses work. Now I have not ridden a horse since last year. So excuse me if im wrong, but since when did horses stop and slow down just because there is a 2 cm rock in the way? And why does the horse stop when it turns too fast? Obviously a horse cannot turn 90 degrees and keep the speed. But it still turns a little with the good speed.

The only realistic thing about horse riding is how Roach sometimes avoid running into trees.

I've never had the horse slow down or stop from a 2cm rock. That just doesnt happen. Sure if you run it into a tree it will stop...
