The food part is the problem. I suck at this game, and it's combat, so i need a constant supply of cheap and reliable food. Any suggestions?
How do i get it?
I never saw this in my inventory.
Cast Arxii on deer and hare as well as other non-hostile animal to make it stop running away ... then chop it down for meat. ... and yes, those geese and chickens also provide good meats ... just don't hunt them in front of the villagers, do it at night and then blame the fox.
You really need to start investing and using potions. They are a vital part of the combat in W3 like blade oils and can mean the difference between winning or losing a fight. Until you get hold of some of the more useful decoctions using Quen to minimize the damage to take is a good way to make your supplies last.
The best way to get food is to literally search every body and crate and bag you see while you're exploring(using the witcher sense helps a lot) that way you should be able to find enough to keep you alive, with enough scrounging you should be able to avoid buying any food which is good because its far too expensive. You need to make effective use of what food you have too, spamming it doesn't do anything, be sure to only use another piece after the current one has expired that way you only use what is needed to keep you alive and fighting. Afterwards you can meditate to regain health on the lower difficulty settings which is also an amazing way to regain health because its free.
As far as the best way to make money, be sure to pick up everything is value to sell obviously but managing your money is very important early game. Things that you can end up needing can be expensive and if you go spending your cash willy nilly on weapons and armor then you run the risk of needing you buy some item thats vital to a potion or decoction that you need and cant find anywhere in the world. I Never bought weapons or armor, they're expensive and almost without fail I always found something better in loot shortly after I spend the money on something from a shop. Hidden treasures are your best friend too, you can get good weapons and armor from them and any you don't use can almost always be sold for a good amount because the stuff is often rare or relic.
Once you get a few skill points and decide to go for a sign or hybrid build you can grab Active Shield which is the best healing in the game. For an Alchemy build the Refreshment skill is very useful for chugging non-healing potions while making Swallow the only healing potion you'll ever need. Once I had 3/5 refreshment I never used White Rafford's potion ever again, 5/5 is just nuts.
I'd also like to point out armor is important as well. The less damage you take the less you need to heal. Save your crowns for the lvl 4 Temerian Armor and then there is the lvl 10 Nilfgardian. Temerian can be found in White Orchard from the merchant you saved in the beginning, Nilgardian is found at the quartermaster at Crow's Perch.
You need to craft it.
You would have to craft to complete an optional sidequest in White Orchard, but if you're level 6 then I'm guessing you're already in Velen - and that quest can only be done before you leave White Orchard.
Sell items to the correct merchants. Weapons to blacksmiths, armor to armorers, food to innkeepers.
I would not say it is the only choice, but it is not a terrible choice. Yes, it becomes worthless later on, but at that point, you can buy a respec potion and simply respec to something else. You get the benefit of not needing food items early, and then when you want the extra point, you get that too later on.
