It was love at first sight for him.
He managed to save Yen's life binding their fates through Last Wish so the djinn couldn't kill Yen without killing his master - Geralt. Evil tongues speak that he made her love him with that wish but they are wrong - he simply saved her life.
They have a long and deep story of relationships. They are both sterile but want kids (especially Yen, she even tried to murder a dragon to regain an ability of becoming pregnant) and sometime later Ciri became their adopted daughter. Their love grew stronger and both of them sacrificed much to defend those who they love. Yen even became a prisoner of a very powerful mage who wanted to capture Ciri but Yen didn't fall (though he brainwashed her and made a puppy-asassin from her).
At the end of the books Yen tries to resurrect Geralt and dies as well.
Combining knowledge of the books and what previous games show us we can say that redhead never loved Geralt and doesn't still, she wants him as a puppy-asassin who loves her like Saskia "loved" Philippa and thus is willing to do everything she says.
Book spoilers:
They met in a town called Rinde, when Geralt and Dandelion were in trouble. They were seeking her for help but ended up destroying half of the town as Yennfer was trying to tame a Djinn (a spirit that grants wishes). In the middle of chaos Geralt realizes the Djinn is actually granting his wishes so his last wish was that his fate was bound with Yennefer's. This also saved her life.
From that point their relationship had ups and downs, but they always deeply loved each other. Sometimes they were like strangers (or pretended to be), sometimes they were really close.
When Ciri came into the picture, this brough them close once again, Yennefer becoming a mother figure for her, while Geralt was the father. Yennefer was trying to teach Ciri about magic and send her to school while Geralt was training her at Kaer Morhen to become a good fighter.
They both also sacrificed most of what they had trying to save Ciri after she dissapeared, but each one in their separate way.
And as their fates were bound, Geralt got stabbed at the end of the books and Yennefer tried to save him but (almost) died as well.
It is just like Dandelion said to Ciri:
"Love is just like a pear. Try to describe the shape of a pear. You can´t really do it, just like you can´t explain or describe love."
Anyway... Geralt is in love with Yen because Sapkowsky wrote it so. It was love at first sight for Geralt, and for Yen it was after Geralt risked his life for her when she knew he should have let her die.
And Triss is just the one night stand that just can´t move on with her life. Personally, I can´t stand her. She is false, manipulative, a liar and dangerously obsessive.
If there was an option similar to Keira´s questline where you could end up killing her ... it would be a struggle not to "accidentally" take that option every time...
But anyway... it is your game. You go with whoever you want or with none, or with both... your choice.
Yen was willing to sacrifice more then anyone but Geralt to save Ciri.
And this is why he doesn't love Triss....He wants a woman, not a little girl who lusts over him. I could go into more detail, but you answered your own question.
Better be an emotional punching bag than the man in the relationship amirite?
But I guess if you Want Triss, it's better to have a little girl that will do as you please and when you please than to have a woman that can take care of herself and doesn't brainwash you into loving her amirite?
It's funny how you said that Triss can't take care of herself, have you seen the battle at kaer morhen?
And by the way Yen and Geralt are only together beacuse of magic or a granted wish by a Jhin.
Either way Triss is also a bad option.
And by the way only beacuse you have a ♥♥♥♥ does not mean you are the man in the relationship.
Triss manipulated him so that he would become loyal to her and do whatever she said.
Yen can be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but she is truly in love with Geralt.
I remembered she was in danger at that time...
Also hilarious how Triss is a little girl in your eyes when she got tortured for Geralt and Ciri had he nails ripped of and didn't even cry.
Sure little girl...
Emotionally she is basically a child.
