Well, the fourth dimension is not time. lol
His tongue sharp and silvery, as he implores you.
Your wishes he grants, as he swears to adore you.
Gold, silver, jewels - he lays riches before you.
Dues need be repaid, and he will come for you.
All to reclaim, no smile to console you.
He'll snare you in bonds, eyes glowin' afire.
To gore and torment you, till the stars expire...

HoS story actually stomps all over the base game's stort, just be patient.
The wildhunt were just a bunch of sissy elves.
GOD (his initials 'hint-hint') is far more powerful but needs humanity to stay alive, for his own sinister desires.
The main story had nothing to do with Geralts strength of will or sense. The main story was literally about grasping at bread crumbs in order to find Ciri before the Wild Hunt did - and, I might add, because Imhyr told him to. He was going to do it anyway, but the Emperor is a gigantic factor in his ability to do so.
Everyone manipulated Geralt in his quest to do that. He had to bust ass to find any helpful information from the Baron. He had to deal with Djikstra and more or less Kings Landing political ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to get any information out of Novigrad. He had to deal with all kinds of successional ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and get walked on by the Skellige families to get information from them. The only influence you can even exert on NPCS is through magic or bribery. Geralt doesn't go around going "Do you know who I am? I'm the butcher of Blaaviken. I killed the last remaining dragon."
I fail to see how you think being manipulated by someone as powerful as Gaunter O Dimm is uncharacteristic, or Olgierd. They hold all the cards and Geralt holds basically none. It's the same as literally every RPG. The main character doesn't know the thing they need to know, or doesn't have the thing, and someone else does. They have to get the thing, or there is no game or story.
Geralt is just a Witcher. A famous one, but nothing more than a Witcher all the same. He has no power and influence except over individuals and only then to a certain extent.
Not only that but the Wild Hunt are just mortals. They are just elves with big armor and maces/swords and the same magical powers as Geralt and most important characters in the series. They aren't anything special. They can only even come to his reality because of the conjunction of the spheres and because they learned how to open portals.
Having said that, HoS in its few hours of content is better than the entire base game. Just keep playing.
Don't jump to conclusions yet.
The Wild hunt was not exactly a "masteful story" imo.
