1. I already do enough damage to 1 or 2-shot most enemies, so if there's not 10 or more (which so far there hasn't been) then I don't get 10 stacks at all.
2. The sword's effectiveness suffers without 10 stacks but in a group big enough to even get that many you'll probably end up losing some along the way, making it this frustrating battle to keep up the stacks.
I do about 50% less damage with Aerondight unless it's got 10 stacks, and only then does it do more.
Generally speaking I kill most monsters in a few hits with or without Aerondight so the decision to use the sword or not is purely down to style but if I was going for damage I'd be better off using a Water Hag Decoction (50% attack power so long as health is at max) and the unique silver sword I've found instead.
When I started a NG+ Aerondight was tissue paper compared to the cheapest sword I could buy. All my grandmaster gear was the same. I started NG+ at level 80 and my gear was level 40 from the first play through. I got munched by a pack of 6 level 80 wolves so I had to sell it and look for random loot because that was superior to anything I could buy or craft. When I hit level 100 all my random loot maxed out while witcher diagrams stayed maxed at level 60. Worst of all was red skull monsters when I was stuck at level 100. They literally broke the game. I was level 96 when I went to Byways and fought the Sarasti vampire - a level 107 behemoth. I died like 50 times.
You do realize that, for every strike landed upon a foe/monster, you get one charge added to the Aerondight's power stack, correct?
You also do know that every strike from the Aerondight increases the sword's attack power by an additional 10%, right? With the ability to stack up to 10 charges maximum.
You also do know that once you've stacked up the maximum of 10 charges on the sword, every strike landed upon a foe/monster afterwards is a Critical Hit strike, doing Critical Hit damage (in addition to any other increases in critical hit damage from Glyphs, Runestones, Mutations, Potions, etc.), which for me, usually kills the end opponent/monster instantly.
Final thing: You are aware of that, once you've built the stack of 10/10 charges on the Aerondight, and you've expended the charges back down to 0/10 by killing a foe/monster (all without getting hit by the enemy), your sword's attack power PERMANENTLY increases every time you discharge a critical hit strike from the Aerondight. I ask because it sounds like you weren't aware of that fact.
The sword permanently levels up with you as you play through the game. No other sword does that. It's also worth mentioning that with the Runewright in the very beginning of the Hearts of Stone expansion, has the ability to add sockets into the Aerondight, since it has none on it's own.
Sounds like you need to practice counter-attacking and parrying. Cause it isn't hard for me to build up 10+ charges on the Aerondight. I can do that with a pack of wolves, wild dogs, or bandits, and if you don't get hit the entire time, that's an easy way to level up your sword's attack power.
Even GEsheft wiki says aerondight is better :P
The stacking damage bonus is what makes this sword hands-down the most powerful weapon in the game. At 10 stacks, you are dealing 100% more damage with 100% crit chance - there is no other sword in the game that can offer that kind of sheer damage output. You only lose stacks from taking a direct hit (bleed/burn/poison damage does not deplete stacks, nor do hits that are absorbed by Quen), so if you struggle to avoid incoming attacks, I recommend investing in Bear school armour, taking Protective Coating and Mutated Skin, and boosting Quen as much as you can. In fact it's a good idea to do this anyway because Quen benefits massively from stacking damage reduction.
Seriously, go ♥♥♥♥ yourself, you horrible piece of ♥♥♥♥.
Isolate the last wolf or bandit in a group.
Thwack it ten times with Aerondight, using Quen to mitigate the chance of losing stacks if you don't dodge a bite.
Switch to Aard, knock him down, then finish him off. The execution counts, basically.
It'll work, unless you are inflicting DOT effects as it won't count if the last HP is removed by poison/fire/bleed even if said DOT effect was caused by hitting with Aerondight.
That shovel is so badass. :D Big ups there.
