Matter of Life and Death and "Collect em' all".
So I'm at the masquerade and I know that if I don't beat these dudes playing Gwent, I won't get the cards needed for the achievement.

I was wondering, is there any way to beat them having a regular deck? I played a couple of matches against shop owners, but these guys seem to be pretty hardcore.

You don't need an exceptional deck but you should have done a good amount of gwent quests prior to that. It's a shame that there's no warning that you should begin that quest with a good deck, and you're basically screwed otherwise.

They should have added just a tid bit of dialogue from Triss where she mentions that there will be a gwent tournament there.

That would've been awesome. I slowed down a bit regarding Gwent just cos' I got hooked with questing on Novigrad... luckily I have a saved game right before buying the masks, guess it's rollback time for me.

Gonna be checking out a Gwent card guide to avoid this situation in the future...

Damn, I don't seem to have previous saved stats before entering the masquerade. This sucks balls. How was I supposed to know I was heading into a quest that would be a dead end for another completely unrelated quest?

Save before you play, reload if you loose. That's what I think most people did the first time around.

You can save before playing each match

Can confirm.

I finally managed to pull it off and get the Dandelion card, so I thought I'd share my strat. Nothing special though, but with a bit of luck you can actually beat the last guy (he uses a Monster Deck) with vanilla cards.

Just pass the first round, he'll try to end it in round 2 no matter what. Make him play everything and try to get to round 3 by using Biting Frost. If you can tank round 2, round 3 is just playing whatever you got left. If you got lucky, you'll win. Also, the leader that doubles siege cards is a must.

I have no idea how i did it but i did. One of the hardest thing so far. Just with basic set and little help Villentretenmerth. You just need fool them to go all in. And the last one use basicaly just sword card so try get freez card.

Use special card like biting frost/fog/rain depend on which cards they use mainly, set gwent difficulty in easy in the setting also help in your case
Follow with that is baiting them into using more card then use a special card to set everything they have to 1 while keep clear of you deck not to be affected
Example: if they use mostly sword card, try baiting them into using more and more while you just balance between sword with archer or catapult card, then when they overscore you and give up the round, use biting frost to demote all their card
