If I could do it then you can too
probably
anyways believe me, just get far away from him when he's about to do the bat thing and you'll be fine, the rest of the boss is easy

Thats what im doing when im trying to dodge the bats. Welp i guess i should just continue trying to get his health down just enough to go to phase 3. I think this boss fight won't be worth the satisfaction at the end

Immidiately after the bat-attack he will try to smash you on the ground, thus leaving him voulnerable for a few seconds. You really need to utilize that window of opportunity. You don't want to prolong this fight.

I tried rolling different angles and timing, but never succeeded to fully dodge the bat-attack. Maybe there's the perfect sweet spot, dunno. Might have been mitigated by quen or rolling towards it. I managed to pass the second phase rather quickly, without ever really countering the bat-attack, and I'm playing on death march. Used alot of potions though.

Just stay out of his way and use quen. When he his down hit him a few times and the back up.

Honestly, he doesnt take much to get him if you get the sword from the Land of Fables after you beat the cloud giant. Its better than the sword that the Lady of the Lake gives you. It takes Detlaff out fast.

After about 30 tries, I found a way to very reliably dodge the bats. The key is to be EXTREMELY far away and sprint along the edge of the arena. When you see him prepare to use the bat attack (Sit still for an extended period of time), get as far away as possible and sprint along the edges of the arena. You'll almost always avoid the bats by doing this, allowing you to close in for an easy kill.
If you have trouble dodging the bats, bring White Raffard's decoction and a good healing item (I prefer dried fruit, it heals about 1/4th of your HP per item). Their healing stacks.

yrden friendo, put yrden down where you are, wait for them to come and dodge out the way, also have quen on too.
blizzard can help if you are not fast enough also

The actual way to dodge the Bat attack is to Space Bar laterally (Left or right when facing second phase Dettlaff).
Try to move away from the boss to give you more time to dodge easily, since the attack is linear once triggered.
You can also use Tab (by default) to time your action more accurately.

Managed to beat the boss after some tries. I had most troubles with the bat attack and the tips you gave me tremendous help in that matter. Thanks for all the tips you guys gave me

Okay, I'm on my first play through, but on Death March and the bats one-shot you. I finally, FINALLY, learned how you can reliable dodge them. It's a three step process:

1. Distance yourself from Dettlaff as much as possible.
2. A second or two before the bats are released, sprint laterally (left/right).
3. When the bats are released and near you, dodge roll (spacebar) in the direction you are sprinting.

I haven't beaten him yet, but after a dozen tries at least now I can at least dodge the bloody bats! Hope this helps!

AT ALL TIMES

Black blood and vampire oil should be used until you run out during this fight. (it may be worth saving your black blood until phase 3)

have a food item in one of your quick item slots. This will automatically be replaced with a different food item when you run out and at this point you will probably have a huge stockpile of food items. you will get a constant supply of healing from this.

Echinada decotion should be used as well, again any healing is good.

PHASE 1

This phase is easy, play cautiously by dodging constantly as it is not worth using any reasorces for this phase. If you take damage use Quen to heal.

PHASE 2

The bats can be dodged by running to the side when you see them being prepared. Make sure you dont walk into one of the ground traps while doing this. Alternatively the upgrade which reduces damage taken while dodging will make dodging bats a viable option.

Do not attempt to use Quen (primary or secondary use) during phase 2, it is useless.

Quen secondary form can be used to heal a large amount of health but you can only take one attack, if you get caught in a combo you will loose much more health than you gain.

Attack when the boss lands, but be aware of the AOE attack which follows, do not get greedy.

PHASE 3

Have Quen shield active at all times, every time you loose it you should ovoid the boss until you can cast it again.

Focus on killing the attacking boss itself and then target the sacks.

Black blood is most useful during this phase

PHASE 4
One hit will finish the fight. I dont know if or not the boss can do anything at this point so be careful, you would not want to die now.

Personally, playing on Death March, I found Aard with piercing cold to be very effective for this fight. If you can blast him out of the sky as he swoops towards you, you can get a good few strong hits in when he is on the ground. If you are lucky just that one attack may be enough to get to phase 3. I achieved this once then messed up in phase 3, but once I discovered this could get through phase 2 pretty consistently with only 2 attacks, with only one lot of bats to dodge, none if I could knock him out of the sky the second time too.

Phase 3 you can complete just by destroying the sacks so you can dodge from sack to sack getting an Aard attack and sword hit in before you have to dodge the boss again.

So, lots of ways to complete this fight.

I found the piercing cold tip to be very useful, thanks! Also put distance between you and him when he charges the bat attack and run/dodge sideways.

Phase 2, the decoction that makes you immune to Stagger is very useful against the bat attacks. If you have Quen up they will do no damage!
