EDIT: when you fight the bandits, or whoever they are look for the leader (named leader) he usually has the key

Is it near the cave in Toussaint? Use the witcher medallion and look around, you'll see the red object on the wooden crane or something like that, i don't remember exatly, it is just few steps away from the cage

This was it, it's on the "table" by the tree in the middle of that area.

My game glitched out just after I'd killed the last dude, so I thought the body with the key had despawned or something.
I was trying to get the key with console commands but it never worked.
Then I read your comment, I turned around ingame (I was facing the cell), and there it was.
Major forehead slap on my part.
