Only the Wolven armor can be crafted from scratch. All else needs the master version to be crafted.
And OP, as far as I know color does carry over one version to another, but I may be wrong (I think I remember my Ursine gauntlets keeping their colour, but that was the only thing I dyed before upgrading).
Good to know. I only crafted the Grandmaster Wolven armor in my first B&W playthrough. I think I used the Grandmaster Ursine swords as well for the adrenaline generation but I didn't remember needing the Mastercrafted version to make them. I've verified that what you say is correct though.
I wonder why only the Wolven grandmaster gear could be crafted from scratch... maybe it was just an oversight and they forgot to include the Mastercrafted version in the diagram recipe.
Since the Wolven armor was a DLC, it'd be an issue to force players to have that installed in order to run B&W, even if the armor itself was free.
