Why do I have to play as Geralt?
This game's biggest flaw is Geralt. You have to play as Geralt. I would have love to explore the world in this game, on my own, not as Geralt. I've tried to play all the Witcher games, but the more Geralt I see, the less enjoyed I'll be.

But it isn't just Geralt I don't like. It's him being a witcher. I don't like playing as a half-mutant or whatever he is. Makes me feel I have a certain affliction.
I prefer bows, spears or daggers in these medieval-fantasy games, but he uses two swords. The mediocre spell selection only makes me wish I could play a real caster. If that is super rare in this setting, then it isn't a fun setting.

I do not care about any of his companions or whoever he meets. Because they are talking to Geralt and not to me, or any character I have in mind. In other games you have minor to major customization. You can make yourself or any character you have in mind (including Geralt). But in The Witcher, it doesn't follow your story, it follows Geralt's story. Such a shame.

stfu geralt is great
It's not a flaw. You're a flaw. The series is based on books. It's a Role Playing Game if you didn't know what RPG stands for. You play the role of Geralt and it's called The Witcher because he is a witcher. If that is too much to handle, go spend your time with a generic open-ended game such as Skyrim where you can do as many boring things in a boring world with a boring story that you are the center of.

because they designed the game for you to play as geralt? ask the same question in any other single player

This series is not for you. Stop now, you're not worthy to even buckle Geralt's boots, let alone comprehend and appreciate one of gaming's greatest protagonists of all-time. Your role is Geralt of Rivia, nvm, I'm not even going to try and explain what should be self evident. Do more research on the games you plan on playing next time, maybe then you will not be shocked to find out that they do not fit your status quo.

you play as Geralt because A.) he is a Witcher and the game is called The Witcher and 2.) the games is based off of the novel series on Geralt and his allies Triss, Yen, Ciri etc. If this bothers you that Geralt is the star and focus in the games just like he is the star and focus in the books that the witcher series is based off of then I am guessing that this series of games is not for you Also Geralt is great.

This game forum is awesome. Some of the most incredible and fantastic complaints I have ever heard!

Also not being a witcher would mean just about every "Bigger" monster would 1 or 2 shot you. That's kinda the point a witchers creation.

On a side note though I wouldn't mind seeing a mass effect style Witcher game down the line. Create your own Witcher pick his school, etc etc. God knows they left enough hints about the witchers needing new blood.

It could always be a prequel. For anyone who has read the books and/or played the entire trilogy, there are still a lot of locations, sub-plots and characters they could pursue in either a prequel or sequel. The Witcher universe has plenty of lore and history to pull from even after 3 large games.

I can see pros and cons about them going this route, however, we'll at least get an idea of what kind of direction a char. created TW game could be like after Cyberpunk 2077. Since AFAIK, you will be able to create your own character, choose to play as female or male etc.

Another game idea that for a Witcher game without Geralt as the MC (Noooo! :steamsad:) would be to play as a younger Vesemir, that'd be quite interesting. Or one of the other Wolf School Witchers, Lambert or Eskel.

Personally, I'd favor Lambert. His personality with how sarcastic and cynical he can be would make for an intriguing game IMO. I could see you playing as a more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥/darker Witcher post-TW3 as Lambert.Espec. when considering certain outcomes. CDPRs writers will work up some kind of magic. I expect another game based in the Witcher universe, there's no way they'll let their baby go that easily, they just need a break.

That is a fair enough complaint for a character driven narrative. It doesn't matter how well crafted the tale is if the individual reader/player finds the central figure in the narrative abhorrent. No amount of character model mods will change who Geralt is at his core.
Unfortunately for you, this series is adapted from the novels rather than being a spin-off set in the same world. At this point, CD Projekt could probably afford to give that conept a try even if it is a prequel rather than a sequel.

And Geralt is absolutely the strongest point in this game.

Hmm. . .good question. I think, maybe, just maybe, it's because. . .oh, I don't know, he's the main character in the books, and that the franchise is based- I could be wrong, though- on the book series? Yeah, such a TERRIBLE idea to force you to play as character that the story revolves around. How dare, they! They DARE to make you play as the main character. Ugh, what a silly thing to do. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

I just had a funny thought. playing a witcher game and complaining you have to play as Geralt is like playing a Batman game and complaining you have to play as Batman. It's a touch ludicrous.

I felt like during the game plenty of hints are dropped about needing to create more witchers. I mean... one of the endings could easily be turned into new schools "founding" or injecting new life into an old school.

They could just pop a a couple generations into the future where main characters from this game are like legends in a new one. They could even add some new creatures with some slightly creative Retconning.
