Can I come back to Velen if I leave for Skellige?
Does the main quest make me revisit velen at some point? I seem to have cleared of most things from the map besids the norteastern area of the map which is also the DLC area launch point for Hearts of Stone. Everything area is level 30 above and I accidentally ended up running into a pack of wild boars protecting a treasure. Clearly almost all encounter will feel like a mini bossfight so all that is left are quests that need me to go to skellige.

Okay! I guess, my answer will suffice. The main story quests runs like this, if you follow the game from lower to higher difficulties....

Kaer morhan > white orchard > vizima > velen > novigrad > skelliga > novigrad > velen > vizima > kaer morhan (here, before fighting the hunt for the first time, you have to travel, all 3 places to gather your army) > novigrad > velen > vizima > novigrad > skelliga (final fight) > North eastern novigrad (heart of stone) > velen > Toussaint (blood and wine)...!

So, to sum up, yes! Main story will bring you back to velen, significantly twice. Once you have to get uma, before first hunt fight and once you find ciri in skelliga.

Yes, you can return as soon as you encounter a fast travel point on skellige.

No I know that. But does the main quest in the game have you return to Velen at anypoint naturally? Or do I have to remind myself to go back to velen to finish off loose ends.

you will return

Well besides the DLC area everthing I have pretty much done or solved. Most active quets requires me to either head to skillege to conclude or continue progress. So I was curious if the main plot will lead me back to velen for some reason or the other. From what you have described I guess it does altough the chances are less since I have concluded everything there is to Velen.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

and you can fast travel nearly any time between regions once you've discovered signposts.

True! But I don't recommend it. Traveling on horseback, even off-road sometimes, brings out some interesting small quests at times, or gives a new clue for some treasure hunt quest. Those are largely unmarked in the map. :)

Thanks!! That was exactly the answer I was looking for. I tend to be systematic and clean off a given area completely before I move on. Which is one of the reasons I like TW so much as it tends to involve previous areas and characters over the course of the main plot several times unlike many games where you get a bunch of quests, complete them and move on.

I was also using the fast travel quite liberally since the map is so vast and certain areas take a while to reach but lately I have been traveling horse back to local areas more often. Its definitely a beutiful ride and to think all that gorgeous background made up of explorable areas.

Boat ride is pretty peaceful. Although largely uneventful. Good preparation for God of War.

Ah! That's so obvious!! 😅
You literally can't travel between any other isolated region, without signpost except, velen to novigrad and vice versa. ☺

Boat ride is indeed very good but kinda lame cz only surprising elements are like, finding treasure and fighting sirens. Too bad for a game, that provides marvellous travelling experience on road but comparatively, devastating experience on water. ☺

You're welcome! I, however forgot to mention "oxenfort" in the answer. But largely that port is actually under novigrad region so, i believe, my forgetfulness is excused! 😉😜

Oh, and I've another tiny spoiler for you. if you travel back to white orchard, after picking Radovid as the ruler of north, you can be a hero by savings Tomira from witch hunters. 😉..

You do remember Tomira, do you?? Besides pretty face and voice, she has more, ummm.... ASSets! 😉😜😂

main point's one doesnt've to pay for skellige boat ride again. but travel for free as many times back and force as desired. no opportunities're lost in tw3 even travel time's irrelevant.

Awesome, so I'm lvl 13 and I can go get the Witcher Cat school equipment diagrams (lvl 14) at any point now (theyre in skellegie)? I'm still looking for dandelion's sluts in Novigrad.
