there are decoctions and quen abilities that basically reduce the game to "Just the Story!" difficulty, even on so-called 'deathmarch'.
If you want reasonable difficulty, play without the "heal in combat" abilities on death march.
also there are good mods which overhaul balance for subsequent playthroughs.
Use griffin gear plus the decoctions that increase sign intensity, refresh stamina and such.
And once you get to blood and wine, abuse Euphoria, win
You can build Geralt into a character that relies on signs and bombs to deal damage, but those two are more seen as support for his swords. You could take easily take out a group of bandits by setting them alight with igni then throwing a superior devils puffball on them, and keep them in the poison cloud with Aard. It's not as fun as hacking them up, but hey - for someone who doesn't take to melee, mixing up signs and bombs could be an option.
Amplify whichever sign you enjoy using. For me, Igni is only useful if the burning chance is 100% - this can be easily reached by improving sign intensity.. no real need for igni glyphs imo
