who is the elf you play gwent with
He says he recognized me, is thus somehow related to the books or previous games?

He is located close to roach's camp, you win the ciri gwent card off of him I believe.

Do you know what happened in the books, did he save my life or something?

No, Geralt was recovering from Vilgefortz's injuries in Brokilon forest, and elves were recovering from their Scoia'tael battles, guided to Brokilon by Milva. That's when they might have met.

None of the names are mentioned, it's only mentioned he got elven clothes, boots and sword from there. And Milva+Jaskier (Dandelion) joined him on his journey shortly after. Seriously the books are more than worth reading.
