Should I play this now, or wait for next gen?

I played a little bit of this here and there, but never got fully into it. I am thinking about starting over and sticking with it, but do you think I should wait for next gen update to play this, or just go ahead and start diving in now? What is your opinion?

I had the same dilemma. It depends if you're willing to wait until later this year for the update. I, myself, didn't want to wait.

you can play it again but like a quick playthough, so when the next gen update comes out you will really see the difference that it makes

How badly do you want to play right now? It may not drop on schedule. Also, AFAIK they have not announced the recommended system requirements. They have said it will support ray-tracing, which would seem to indicate we will need at least an Nvidia 20-series card to get maximum benefit from the upgrade.

It's a great game in its current state, with graphics still on par with today's games, so if you want to play it right now, definitely do so. It has good replayability, too, so if you beat the game you will happily replay it in next-gen.

Just play it now and get hdreworkedproject texture mod and turbo lighting mod and you have next gen mod author is teaming up with CD PR for next gen update as stated in the mod forum and don't for get to get tweak mod to max the game out to its fullest graphics

If you have something else to get into, play that. If not, the game is tight as it is. You could play the base game now and continue the expansions after the next gen edition comes out. If you can wait for 20 weeks, be my guest, but its better to get into the game instead of waiting for a perfect time. Play Witcher 2 and Witcher 1 in the meantime, I'm sure you'll complete them before Witcher 3 gets released.
