Does anyone actually bother with Gwent?
Gwent has to be one of the worst minigames I've ever played, and definitely one of the most poorly explained things out of all of The Witcher 3's awful tutorials. I have not won a single game and I still don't know what I'm supposed to do. Doesn't even look like there's any strategy to it, or any luck. I basically just keep laying down cards until my opponent beats me. Why does the game keep pushing it on me? It's a stupid card game.

lol.. exactly how I felt my first time.. I ended up loving the game once I got a few good cards and learned a few strategic attacks. its deck building,, so its both luck and strategy. but with a monster deck, I'd win 97% of the time.

in the beginning, its very frustrating. but once you've built your deck... you'll bulldoze through anyone.

I agree, the rules are vague. I guess YouTube university would be my first suggestion.

I usually avoid mini-games in my PC gaming, but for good or for bad gwent can influence your Witcher 3 playthrough. Mostly, you need to build a good deck so you more or less need to commit to getting cards right from the start.

Perhaps these might help.

btw, its a very simple game, don't get intimidated.

The game is quite simple once you understand base mechanics. After that I find it really fun and usually try to play with npcs. Sometimes even loading completed game save to play few games with majordomo.
Stop, blasphemer. Gwent is incredible.

Indeed, there's stupidity involved. But it doesn't concern the gwent...

I tried the stand alone game they made and got bored of it after about two hands, and have only played once in this game. I don't plan to ever play it again unless maybe I'll miss out on some piece of gear or something that may be a reward from it.

I'm a long time MtG player which blows away Gwent. Hell, even 21 or Go Fish blows away Gwent imo. I like the idea of having a mini-game, and love card games, but I just don't find Gwent to be fun at all.

Gwent is half the reason I even play this game

This Gwent is significantly better, I promise https://store.steampowered.com/app/1284410/GWENT_The_Witcher_Card_Game/

Git Gud, Gwent is only for winners.

Some quest are related with it. Two tornaments and of course one part of the main quest in blood and wine, if you do not want to spend money instead (not that you do not swim in it at this time)

i'm planning on collecting all the cards and doing all the quests.
to initially improve your gwent winrate:
* try to buy a horn from a shopkeep, they boost a row by x2 and win rounds.
* be aware of card advantage, if you manage to go up 1-3 cards when losing a round, you are actually in a good position to win the game.
* know your opponent! elves are weak to fog, monsters are weak to frost, nilfgaard is weak to dummys.
* gwent quests give good cards that make your deck busted.

So the strategy behind winning is just buying better cards? That's not even a game, that's just pay2win.

This is only a half of the strategy. The other half is to actually understand the game and figure out the good cards for your faction and maybe revise the deck based on the opponents faction. With that said you can buy all the best cards in the deck but loose to the low level monster NPC due to not understanding how your cards work or what is the monster deck style (I am talking about the gwent in the Witcher 3 not a standalone. That one I did not even tried.)
