in the beginning, its very frustrating. but once you've built your deck... you'll bulldoze through anyone.
I agree, the rules are vague. I guess YouTube university would be my first suggestion.

I'm a long time MtG player which blows away Gwent. Hell, even 21 or Go Fish blows away Gwent imo. I like the idea of having a mini-game, and love card games, but I just don't find Gwent to be fun at all.
to initially improve your gwent winrate:
* try to buy a horn from a shopkeep, they boost a row by x2 and win rounds.
* be aware of card advantage, if you manage to go up 1-3 cards when losing a round, you are actually in a good position to win the game.
* know your opponent! elves are weak to fog, monsters are weak to frost, nilfgaard is weak to dummys.
* gwent quests give good cards that make your deck busted.
