Early Armor
Hey everyone, totally new at The Witcher. I'm a tad bit obsessed with armor in video games and was wondering if I could get some good armor (Preferably heavy) after exiting the prolouge.

The best armor in the game are the various sets of Witcher gear (from the many schools, like Griffin, Wolf, Bear, Cat). Once you get to the first large region (Velen), you'll get the option to buy certain maps from merchants & craftsmen. These maps will put you on the path to acquiring the diagrams for this gear (which you then have to take to an Armorer to craft).

You can ofcourse explore on your own and come across the diagrams as well, but I recommend the map approach.

The various armors in the game are excellent looking, and frankly one of my favourite parts of the game. As a general rule, the armors of the Cat School are 'Light' (giving more stamina, speed etc.), that of Griffin & Wolf School are 'Medium', and of the Bear School (aka Ursine) are the 'Heavy' ones which offer maximum armor protection.

Be sure to not sell any of them though...as you'll always need the gear from the previous tier in order to upgrade to the next level: Normal > Enhanced > Superior > Mastercrafted.

Ofcourse you can also pick up certain non-Witcher heavy armors as loot during side quests/treasure hunts and depending on your current level, they may be great as well. Such as the 'Mag Deira Cuirass' that you can find in many places in Velen.

What level do I have to be to go to Velen? I'm pretty much just gunning for some early stuff, not planning on getting permanent armor.

early armor from DLC isn't really that bad, like nilfgaard or temerian armor. But after you craft a witcher gear, you'll be enough until later

Make sure you complete White Orchard before you leave for Velen as several of the quest become unavailable after you leave. You will probably be level 3 or 4 when you leave White Orchard after killing the Griffin.

Even being Lvl 2 is enough to access Velen (you'll get access regardless as soon as you complete the Griffin contract in White Orchard and further the story).

But like Furiey said, I'd suggest doing everything there is to do in White Orchard BEFORE going to battle the Griffin. This way you'd be Lvl 5-6 by the time you get to Velen, and you'll be set to get some good gear.
