If you need a HP boost during a fight, use White Raffard's Decoction.
The food-skill is RIDICULOUS, overpowered and destroys the DM-feeling. I tried it out and it feels like being immortal or something. What were they thinking while creating this skill ?!
The only general skill I would use is the (Cat School Techniques). Its always worth it, when you use light armor.
edit : If you own the HoS DLC, you can use a food-enhancement on your sword. Its less overpowered than the general skill one and also doesnt ruin the gaming experience.
And you'll save a skill slot, too which would make much sense for a NG+ later on.
Its one thing when you are in the middle of a fight and have to manage to eat some bread while your life-bar is slowly filling up or if your life bar is constantly filling without doing anything.
Thats a huge difference in my eyes. Just my opinion. :)
I thought you want to buy food since you said
And for the general crit skills, yeah they are pretty good for a NG on DM but later on, you'll have decotions and skills in the alchemy and Combat build that will give you near to 100% crit chance so the general skil pointl isnt necessary anymore.
I would suggest to play it that way which suits you best. :)

I do use the Gourmet Skill for its slow health regeneration at lower levels, for convenience and because I try to play with the HUD off as much as possible.
General skills in themselves are very lack luster due to the very first reason being they don't take the mutagen bonuses into account, so the more general skills you put in your build, you are losing out more on the mutagen bonuses. Also, except for a very few exceptions like cat school techniques (attack builds), griffin school techniques (sign builds), metabolic control (extra toxicity), rage management, strong back and gourmet, most of the general skills are all just filler stuffs.
I'd probably agree with you, but at the same time, when you get to higher levels you can really make yourself over-powered to the point there is no challenge. Just using different skills to play to your liking may actually be more fun, especially on a second or third play thru.
Ye it seems its like you can fit one to two general skills late game in your build with out losing the extra bonus's, but it really depends on what abilities youre using IG.
