Is free roam canon?

Bits and pieces maybe. But it's mostly side content to fill out the world and interactions between Geralt and other noteworthy figures.

That said, some of the side quests make for the most fun quests in this game.

I love the free roam. My play style is to do a bit of the main quest, then just wander about, visit the "?"s, do contracts/treasure hunts and just find random stuff for a while.

There are some amazing side quests like the famous talking Roach one... Getting your portrait painted... And I can never forget when I basically got stoned in a cave with 3 Skellige warriors (with the whale ghost etc).

Some side quests actually affect the storybook endings of the game, but I dont know which one is canon, doing them or not.

I actually hated that one, that was the first moment that made me get really angry to the game. She has an annoying cliche character. But most importantly, it is a meta joke in the DLC about how much people hated the horse control and then I realized, instead of putting any effort into fixing the horse, they just spent some budget into making a joke about it.

The fact that I was 140 hours in the game and lost most of my patience with the horse didnt help either.
