Play witcher 3 swords only no magic?
Hi all,

I'm more of a traditional gamer, in the sense that magic, potions etc put me off! But I am in a situation now where not many new non magic great games are out and I just finished dying light.

Magic etc tends to put me off as I just like good old steel on skin and I'm not talking the devil may cry button bashing style. Witcher 3 looks good, is rated great and I would love it if it meant there was none of that magic crap I had to do!!

So is there a way/build or do you think it's possible I can play this game assassins creed/shadow of Mordor style by just good old combat? Help appreciated. Thanks.

(PS: I tried skyrim but combat is just sooo boring for me! But love quests and map size/exploration)

Sometimes you'll have to use it in quests, sometimes it makes your life much easier but other than that swords+dodge only is enough for this game.

i mix and match. make sure i put points in so i can use axii options in some conversations. i like the igni skill saves time on killing humans etc. yrden is kind of buggy in myopnion. enmies dont stay in the circle like they should etc. axii dominator would be cool but the cast time to control other enemies is crap for higher difficulties. fun in just story mode but harder diffculties wouldnt even bother.

shield is OP always should put points in that.

They actually shouldn't. The circle doesn't limit the movement, only indicates the border of spell effect.

in the tutorial when you practice yrden the guy cant enter your space with that spell and he indicates no matter what i do i cant enter it. but doesnt work beyond that.

You can focus your build on magic, potions and bombs, or swords.

Player's choice.

Its possible not to use sign but it will be hard certain types of monster like wraith.
Bomb and special crossbow bolt are alternative for signs but certain type of monster like grp of wraith will be annoying in lower lvl and auto scale.

If your going on combat build get the alchemy build that let you drink more decoction.

He says "Couldn't move even if I wanted to" meaning yrden slows him down.
Also the hint that shows after says ydern only slows creatures that walk into it.

Quite helpful guys thanks!! In addition, any links to some tried and tested good builds for swords only or minimalist magic options?

then my point is still made. yrden is pretty much garbage and a waste of skill points. only time i used it was on wraiths and the end of the main story for obvious reasons.

Yeah, in combat the stamina cast is better spent on another quen or igni shot.

So little more research and what I'm looking for is called a 'pure' combat build. Anyone have experience with this? Any thing I should adopt/avoid when using pure combat build?

The combat is pretty straight forward. Enemy's health flashes in red - press dodge or roll, then slice the enemy with a light attack. Optionally apply quen (magic shield) to yourself to get a free hit from enemies. Repeat many times to win.
In fact there isn't any real magics in the game, only 5 magic signs you can use that cost stamina which is used solely for casting signs (and sprinting).

There is no real reason to not use signs, they help a lot, they cost nothing, they are almost spammable.

And every build in this game fights in melee. Melee is the only thing that is required, alchemy and signs are pretty optional.

This is my build at the very end of the game, after HoS and B&W:

Almost no magic. Yrden (against wraiths) is useful, but sufficient out of the box.

You need no luck, only some training (dodge, roll).
