As for repair kits, they do come by quite slowly and through exploration. By endgame you will have a lot of them, but the main fundamental once you start the game and till you reach atleast mid-game is trying out new and better swords instead of repairing the same sword time and again, unless you have no better weapon. Once you cross mid-game progression (Novigrad or Skellige), you will start getting swords that you want to really stick to. Till then just try out different weapons or unlock the blacksmith that can repair stuff.

For ordinary swords it's usually cheaper to swap it out for another. Alternatively use a blacksmith to repair it. Witcher swords are worth repairing as they can be upgraded.
