these horse races are freaking difficult
any suggestions on accurate steering when galloping at max speed? I am constantly going off of the course and getting stuck on something.

Guess you just suck, cos I find them astonishing easy - even the hardest one, Palomino.

I don't really have a problem with Roach going off course or getting stuck. It's when he runs out of stamina that I have to maneuver carefully to block my opponents while regaining stamina.
Hmm i never had those problems. My issue was running out of stamina at the end so i just started to block of the other racer while my stamina filled back up.
Just stand in front of the racers. They won't pass by your horse. If you have the max saddle then, Roach will have a high stamina rate.
Tough, I admit. But once you practice a bit, it's actually a lot of fun, even if I consider it even more demanding and tiring than a real horse race.
Well, not really, but close.
I'm always exhausted at the end...
Play intuitively, use the mouse as your own hand, and... reload. Call it "reconnaissance"...

Using Keyboard and mouse, you can steer with mouse, and then use buttons too for tight turns.

There are places you can balk to regain stamina, like bridges, but you can actually turn Roach sideways to stop others passing while you regain stamina.

The last remotely tough one is Palomino, because none are long enough on Skellige to worry about stamina.

I ought to slap you for being such a ♥♥♥♥ on the W3 forums day in day out.
OP, I have had similar issues because, to me, Roach seems unwieldly at time due to not controlling like a car with which you race in most games. Often times, he will turn the opposite direction because he's trying to follow the road even during a race (at least for me). Its not an uncommon complaint but its not gonna get better so take some time to get use to it.

Lol - try it.

My reply was true. I wouldn't normally be so brutally truthful though, except te OP had been an aaars in another thread.

Day in day out huh? Care to give a few examples?
