Is it possible to complete Witcher 3 Main questline only with crossbow?
Is it possible?

On NG+ with the "Cat Eyes" mutation from Blood & Wine DLC - YES it is possible I think.
Cat Eyes : "Crossbow damage is now increased from 107 to 992 (values depend on crossbow used), and crossbow critical hit chance is increased by 50%. Crossbow bolts pierce and knock down or stun opponents. Opponents struck when they have full Vitality lose 15% of Vitality."

The crossbow does damage. So yes it is possible.

But it would be highly improbable that anyone would be willing to actually do it. The length of time added to your playthrough with the long drawn out fights just using the crossbow would generally be to much for most people. It would make what is already a long game even longer. Significantly so.

Even if you max all the abilities dedicated to the crossbow it is no replacement for the swords. It wont do comparable damage.

You would be stuck in a fight hitting the same enemies over and over again with the crossbow and would be like ugh is he dead yet!!!!!

Im just interested in challenges you know?
If you know Dark Souls, people do insane challenges, like only bow challenge, fists, only jumping challenge, etc.
I tried only fist challenge by myself in DS II, where Pursuer (second boss) took me almost 40 mins of killing (because he has 3000hp and one hit with fist took him around 14-15 dmg - so around 200 hits killed him) and I kinda like that feel that you done something harder way :D

well like i said its possible. The crossbow does do damage. Therefor you will be able to damage the enemies. Which means eventually you will kill them.

But I guess I will need to use signs, because of some walls, enemies etc

This isn't necessarily true as some enemies which are central to the main quest regenerate health which may not be able to be overcome simply with crossbow damage. (I don't know for sure though as I haven't tried).

this reminds me of metro last light when I fought a bear with my "bear" fists because I had ran out of ammo xD

If you really want a challenge, you could fist-fight all the monsters to death. I tried. its possible. because fist-fight is considered as fast or strong attack depending on which button you press. Geralt fought a bear and won. He fought a rock troll and won too. I don't see how he could not box a drowner or even a water hag to death either. drowner is a tricky opponent though. maybe not specters. they don't really have a physical form. I never tried to fist fight them. i don't think crossbow work well on them either.

well fighting with the crossbow requires alot of crossbow perks and being on the lowest difficulty since attempting this on dark mode sounds suicidal

some enemies regen so you'llve trouble there. maybe cbow + signs doable. try on easiest diff first.

or maybe fist + cbow?

Or use better bolts?

crossbows with standard bolts do very little damage, if you plan on using specialized bolts it will take you well nearly an eternity to finish the game this way, keep in mind that some enemies rush you and they'll make your job even harder

even with signs and special bolts there are some enemies which regenerate too fast
but what might work is bombs and crossbow... will take an eternity however- if you want an interesting challenge get lords of the fallen and only fight with your fists, witcher is not really the game for fighting

Oh hohoho, you would be surprised the lengths some people are willing to go. If there is someone who can beat Dark Souls by using a bunch of bananas as a controller (and i'm not joking), then i bet somebody can beat this game with a crossbow.

People completed DS on dance pad, with potatoes, no hit, 1 hp, fists only... Everything is possible
