Did I go to undvik too early?

So I decided to go to undvik to get the tools Fergus asked for in Velen. At this point I was up to ‘the old king is dead long live the king’; I had decided to do more side content in velen before continuing the main quest. I show up to the isle in skellige, and I see the ice giant and meet the guy in the ship. Continuing on to Undvik, I killed the troll guarding the tools and then entered the house next to it, and Geralt said some stuff, mentioning a guy named hjalmar. I got confused, since I didn’t know who that was. I looked him up; turns out I can unlock the quest to defeat the ice giant by finishing the main quest I was up to.

My question is; did I go to undvik too early? Was I meant to have started the side quest before entering the “ice giants kitchen”? Moreover, I read about how hjalmar knew Ciri at a young age, is that a major spoiler in any way?

You have done part of a later quest to help Hjalmar. If you leave now and go back to continue with the king is dead quest and then return when you get the help Hjalmar quest you should be ok. If you continue to the point where you meet Hjalmar which is only a little bit further then you will be stuffed.
