Question about merchant selling pass

Hey people, I bought the game yesterday and haven't slept. Didn't know it was this good. Anyway, I'm pretty early on in the game and in Velen. I came across this merchant, axiied his face, got the discount of 50 crowns for a pass into Novigrad. Thing is, I recall reading that you can find another pass somewhere, easily too, completely for free. However this merchant acts like a quest, there is a mark on the map for it. So my question is, if I ignore this guy and look for the other pass, will this guy count as a failed quest in the future after I find a pass? I really don't wanna fail any quests. Failed one in white orchard (you had to go out of your way a bit) and I restarted and trying to not fail any so any help is appreciated.

I played 2 times and don't remember buying a pass into novigrad, just do main quests and some secondary quests that related to the characters in main quests.

The one you're talking is the "Shady Merchant" near the blockade to Novigrad. He sells you a pass for 100, or if you help his cousin in the field nearby he drops it to 25.
Thing is, if you follow the main quest and do the Bloody Baron part to track Ciri, as you should, at the end he gives you a pass for "free". I say "free" because the quest is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gigantic and takes loads of time to do, but it is a main quest anyway.

So, yes, if you ignore the Shady Merchant and get the Baron pass, eventualy his quest will Fail and disappear, but it's a pointless quest anyway, and the XP you gain from helping his cousin is crap compared to what you get on the Baron quest and later on.

I helped the merchant's brother-in-law, and you get a sizeable loot plus experience. You need every bit of crown early game.

Ok thanks all of you. I just wanna have no failed quests so I did it anyway.

Actually without knowing it was HIS brother we were talking about I had already done bitter harvest before I saw this guy and there was a dialogue option of telling him his brother was dead. So I went "Err, uuh.. I 'll get back to you on that one." and buggered off without triggering him xD.

Later I went back to him and told him that I helped his brother but that he was dead, he still gave me the pass! Pretty sure I had no pass before that because I didn't do any of the other two ways you mentioned. Is it a bug, an oversight? I don't know, I don't care I love the game it was just weird that he would just give me the pass.

He said something like "Are you pulling me leg?" and told me to piss off that I'm scaring away his customers, but I also gained an item: pass. A prompt to press V to read it and I did. So yeah I don't understand but it's cool. The quest didn't count as failed.. I still have no failed quests.
