I'm not quite sure, wasn't it that the certain special someone only comes to visit if you have your house fully upgraded? Like, you don't actually have to _put_ stuff on every armour stand and such, but you have to have all the house rennovations etc.? ... I might be wrong, but that's how I remember things.

The upgraded bed comes with benefits as if you sleep in it you will get a few buffs.
The upgraded gardens -herb garden will net you herbs which can transmute greater mutagens from blue to red etc, so if you have 20 blue and need red or green (for advanced mutagens) then it has a purpose.
Having a grindstone and armourers table there is just conveniant.
Roachs stable serves no real purpose.
Fixing the guest room has no real purpose.
Getting armour and weapon stands have no real purpose.
While these things have no purpose, its not as if you should be struggling for the few thousand it takes to buy them all and It just gets rid of a quest in my log so I always think why not.

OH an rennovating the house will lead to to basil saying there was a discovery in the cellar, a breakable wall which reveals something of use.

I disagree with the post marked answered and say the two previous posts are better answers. You get a visitor near the end and you get other benefits.
