Emhyr Kaer Morhen Help

Am I missing something? I've done like about five playthroughs give or take and when it comes time to ask people for help defending Kaer Morhen against the Wild Hunt the same thing always happens. There's a quest to go ask the Emperor Emhyr for help. He agrees, so long as general Voorhis commands it. Geralt automatically refuses with no negotiation or discussion. Geralt then leaves, having gotten no Nilfgaardian aid whatsoever, rendering that entire quest completely useless.

Does it have to be this way, or is there some kind of trick that I'm not seeing to get some help from the Emperor in the battle? We're trying to defend Ciri damnit, Geralt's adopted daughter, against the Wild Hunt, the most terrifying force in the Witcher world, and the only thing standing in the way of an entire Nilfgaardian division coming to our aid is Geralt's personal dislike for General Voorhis (which is completely unjustified because he seems a perfectly agreeable fellow).

So what the actual ♥♥♥♥? Is there no way to gain any kind of Nilfgaardian support, or did CDPR actually create that entire quest just so we could travel all the way to Emhyr's palace and gain nothing from it? I refuse to believe they could possibly be that stupid since their games are so amazing, so what exactly am I missing here? If there's no way to get any help from Nilfgaard, why even put that quest in there to begin with? Why waste our time?

No way to gain nilfgaardian support, thats how the story goes.
For someone who played five playthroughs call it a waste of time, but for a new player its an option he would take and see how it goes.
And its not that you travel allot of time, its just 2 loading screens and 1 minute walk to finish this quest.
