Novigrad, Maribor...coincidence?

I don't know any of the lore for Witcher, however I do want to know where these names come from?

I'm from Slovenia. Maribor is our 2nd largest capital. And Novigrad lies in our neighbor country Croatia, close to our border. Only about 200km of distance lie between these two towns.

Velen I think is somewhere in Germany, however if it was called Velenje, it would be also from my country, specificaly around 5th largest town, lies also very near to Maribor.

So I really want to know if these fictional places have any connections with ours?

Well, if I understand the lore correctly, humans in the witcher's world were pulled from our world and stranded there by the conjunction of the spheres. So it is possible there's a connection. If humans were pulled from those places, they might have named the new settlements they built after the cities they were pulled from.

I could be wrong about some of this though.

If you dig into it, you will find some sources about how the developers took real places and buildings as inspiration (or almost outright copying them). Wouldn't be surprised if there is more to the story and additional geographical background, as you point out with Velen. Might be just coincidence though.

Mislim, da je naključje. Sicer ni far fetched, da bi poljaki vedli za maribor, etc. ampak je prej da so pobrali imena randomly in se je zgodilo, da so dobli ta imena. Ker razen imena samega, ni nic durgega, kar bi kazalo, da so uporabljali slovensko geografijo za svojo igro, v vsakem primeru pa je kul ja in razen nas slovencev, dvomim, da je kdo pomislis enako :)

Bolj ko brskam, bolj dvomim v naključje. V wiki sem prebral da Maribor v Witcher je tudi drugo največje naselje v Temerijenem kraljestvu. Za Novigrad pa mata poleg imena skupno to, da sta oba obmorska naselja.

So tudi druga "naključja"
Upam da bo link delu. Na levi imaš stare grbe glavnega mesta Temerie Vizima oziroma nasplošno Temeriene dinastije. Na desnem so pa stari grbi naše Karantanije. Mislm že sam dejstvo da mata obadva zgoraj črnega panterja je ena proti tisoč!
