Download - Disk Write Error
I've been confronted with this problem for the past few hours and can't find a solution to this. The game is stuck at around 70% and doesn't download past that, giving the 'Disk Write Error'.

I've checked and applied every 'fix' I could find on the internet, yet nothing seems to work.

A quick list of solutions that I found and didn't helped:
  • Steam running in admin mode - check
  • Drive permissions set to full control - check
  • Verify game integrity - check
  • Most of the Steam related fixes (library folder repair, download cache cleared, etc) - check
And I'm still unable to fully download/install the game.

After checking the Steam logs, it seems the problem comes from the ARTBOOK (either the files are corrupted on the server, or something goes wrong when trying to write these particular files on the disk)

This is what the log looks like (only a part of it, as it's pretty much a loop):

[2017-12-29 20:18:09] Downloading 2035 chunks from depot 292033 [2017-12-29 20:18:25] Failed to write chunk in file "ARTBOOK\The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Artbook_EN.pdf", 1048576 bytes at offset 326107136 (File Not Found) [2017-12-29 20:18:25] AppID 292030 update canceled : Failed updating depot 292033 while writing chunk, offset 326107136 (File Not Found) (Disk write failure) [2017-12-29 20:24:49] Failed to write chunk in file "ARTBOOK\The_Witcher_3_Wild_Hunt_Artbook_ES.pdf", 1048576 bytes at offset 431049453 (File Not Found) [2017-12-29 20:24:49] AppID 292030 update canceled : Failed updating depot 292033 while writing chunk, offset 431049453 (File Not Found) (Disk write failure) And this pretty much continues with all the localization artbooks.

This is the only game that had this problem, so I'm really out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. It could be the OS, never had problems with 7, but now with 10... yeah. Anyone has some suggestions on what else I could try?

Seems to me that is not being able to create the file on your disk.

Check if you have in "Program Files(x86)/steam/steamapps/" or any of the subfolders a folder named "ARTBOOKS" created.

You can also check if for some reason your antivirus software is blocking the folder or file creation.

The folder is created, even the files seem to be created, although I find it a bit weird that the size of these files is so large (around 500MB each localization file, is it this big for everyone else?)

Is there maybe a way to skip downloading this files? It's not under the DLC tab, so I guess it comes as part of the base game, automatically downloading with it.

After messing around with the download, re-scheduling the game after each error, it seems to add .1 every time, but I don't really want to keep doing that in the off chance that it might go past it, as it could very well continue to write in the same files (which is why they are getting so big?)

@BuzzardBee Will try that as well, although I'm not getting any blocking or logs in the antivirus to suggest that it's the culprit. Like I said, never had a problem downloading any other game, except this one.

ARTBOOK folder, is 3.05GB :d
you changed region download?
deidian Dec 29, 2017 @ 11:27am
Yes, the artbook is a big PDF file, can't look how much weights but taking in account is a PDF of more than 100 pages all them with images and background not surprised of 500Mb.

Try adding an exception to your antivirus for the steam folder, even as temporary measure. If you are sure that steam runs in admin mode and has permission to the folder only the antivirus can block file access/creation.

First do a "smart test" of your hard drive or a check disk if your hard drive have no problems, look if you have enough space for install and then check the rights.

I did a check on the drive, also defragmented, there's no problem with the HDD itself, I could try and install the game on the SSD, but I don't like having games spread across multiple drives and/or partitions.

The drive has enough space, as Steam pre-allocates the size of the install before starting downloading any files (and the game downloads normally, until around 30GB, just when it starts donwloading the artbook). As I mentioned in my original post, I did add full control permission on the drive (which should apply that permission to any folders/subfolders/files that are on the drive, will have to double check that). But unless this particular game requires some special permission, the drive already had writting permission (otherwise no game would've been able to write on it).

If I could just disable the download of the artbook, it might just install, but I don't know how and if I can do that. I'll see what else I can do tomorrow.

I did, it's written in my original post. The only thing I didn't do is completely reinstall Steam.

I just deleted the ARTBOOK folder, verified game cache, and the folder was redownloaded. took forever to download - maybe overloaded due to xmas sales. but it worked fine.
Pulptenks Dec 29, 2017 @ 5:04pm

Managed to download it in the end, after a lot of fiddling with individual folders. I don't know exactly what fixed it, since I tried many things until it finally downloaded the artbook files.

Hey everyone, I tried everything and I mean everything. Eventually paused my antivirus and is now downloading just fine :)

It is crazy, but I just had this problem. Same file. Deleted the artwork folder, restarted comp, verified the cache, changed regions, chose a different system disk... nothing is working. :(
cheshirm Apr 2, 2020 @ 5:06am
you did not mention turn off antivirus temporarily. check AGAIN. check pc again - some users have more than one antivirus running.
