You are tasked with finding the people she has had contact with so that they can tell you what they know of her. By doing so, you get to play as her and relive those moments. That's the "in Ciri's footsteps" thing.

When you leave Vizima after your meeting with the emperor, you are told that Ciri has been spotted in Velen and Novigrad. Yennefer tells you that she will be going to Skellige to investigate a large explosion that destroyed a forest there. She believes that it was caused by powerful magic and that it may have had something to do with Ciri.

The only solid leads that exist are in Velen with an agent of the emperor, Hendrik, and Novigrad, where Triss is living. You are meant to follow those leads.

Your first marker in Velen should be at the Hanged Man's Tree. If you are still in Vizima, approach the large double doors. You should get a prompt to press E on them as you would for a signpost. This will bring up the map. Press the Spacebar and it will open the World Map. From there, you should see a marker on Velen. Click on it and it will open the Velen map. Find the Hanged Man's Tree signpost and click on it.

Once in Velen, follow your journal and waypoint to continue with the quest.

you don't actually do anything for that quest. you finish it by completing the other main quests in your journal, just ignore it and when you reach a certain point following the other main quests it'll complete

This is one of those games where you really need to pay attention to the dialogue and quest text/journal since just following the markers will only get you so far... and may get you insta-killed if you head somewhere too early. ;-)

The main quest does get sloggy at times, but overall it's a very good game.
