Most overrated game in gaming history?
So this is just my opinion. I own the game on GOG, but I thought I would post it here, considering I'm mainly on Steam. This is not meant to flame the 'best game ever created', according to many. It's to criticize the many flaws it has (again, in my opinion), which never seems to be brought up.

- Main story is horrible. 50 Hours of "go here to find Ciri, and get told that she's at the next place'
- Environments/World is extremely repetitive and bland. Including the NPC's. They all look the same. It's like they only created 4 character models, and put different clothing on them. They created 2 different trees and rocks, and put them all over the place.
- Boring quests. Basically glorified fetch quests. They just added some extra steps to or dialogue around them.
- Combat is horrible. I don't even think I need to go into this one.
- Not getting rewarded for exploration. There's not much to find in the giant world. A lot of copy-paste (side quest) stuff, but no interesting secrets.

There are of course some things that I think the game does well, like some of the creative monsters and the graphics. However, this is definitely not a 9 or 10 out of 10 game. A 7 or 8 top.

How many of you actually finished the game? There must be a reason that the majority of players never finished this game, including myself. I actually had a better time playing Dragon Age Inquisition (and finished it), while that had loads of flaws as well (like the horrible, horrible(!) side quests). Dragon Age Inquisition was interesting to explore though and it had something refreshing to offer compared to other RPG's (like judging criminals). You could find many interesting secrets, or the world/environment was just amazing to look at. The main story was a bit cliche, but way more interesting to follow. Why did people put that game down?

As for RPG....
. you can change if the main character ends up dead or alive at the very end
. you can change if your "daughter" ends up dead, alive, what kind of life she will have
. you can change the major outcome of the war. What faction will be in power by the end. If you decide to go kill a certain king then that makes it so Niflgard will win the war and conquer almost everyone. If you do not kill a certain king, then most of the sorcerers will be dead or in severe danger by the end of the game.
. you can change who may be your love and partner by the end of the game, or none at all
. tons of side quests have very different possible endings depending on your choices. Some of them may even not be possible anymore depending on what you have done before.
In an RPG decision making is provided through gameplay interactions calculated within rules of its roleplaying system. Not via 'press X or Y' cutscene choices.
In TW3 RPG gameplay happens when you decide your perks and gear. Obviously the system is extremely basic and doesn't provide any choices that could substantially change your playstyle or character behavior. (And by playstyle I mean the general approach to problem solving, not just combat style - as long as TW3 pretends to be something more than a looter slasher with cutscenes)

It's not the best game ever made but it's one of the best third person rpg games ever made. Good graphics, very good characters, very good atmosphere and music. Is it overrated? surely. Of course there are issues like garbage horse mechanics, repetitive npc models, trees shaking like a joke and clunky gameplay mechanics etc. but its the characters and in-game atmosphere makes it unique I think. This game's world is like a dream or nightmare, very well crafted. I'm having dreams about the game in real life which rarely happened in my gaming life and I'm an experienced player near the age of 40.

Half life was the best game of its era, age of empires II too, dragon age origins was a legend for that time, diablo 2 too, oh dont forget dune 2, none came even closer at that time, what about mass effect or kotor? They were epitomes of their genres. Skyrim, starcraft, neverwinter nights, red alert, stronghold crusader, fallout 2, age of mythology, stronghold crusader etc. -according to the players of those times- these were some of the best games ever made for the time and were incredibly popular.

Now modern assassin creed games, gta games, witcher 3, rdr 2 and some similar games are the modern cousins of them. Some young people can say these newer ones are "best ever" games but no, its just because young players dont know old pc gaming days, old titles and how good those times were. Every game should be criticised within its era. And in my opinion even with its weaknesses withcher 3 is a great game as a whole. Again one of the best third person rpg's ever made but no not the best game ever made.
Popular doesn't mean best
not overrated. this game was not advertized nor hyped in anyway that we can label as "overrated". personally, i didnt even know this game exist not until a friend of mine (a huge fan of the novel and game series) introduced it to me in 2015. so i don't think it is overrated. it's just really popular.

i'll give you out an example of an overrated thing. perhaps McDonalds fit your taste. overhyped food, over advertized food. everywhere you go in facebook there are ads of mcdonalds. but it tasted subpar and ,at its worst, taste like ♥♥♥♥. this is how a thing can be overrated.

what's funny is this guy. and that bee guy. are all over the discussions thread sniping anything that mentions 'this game is the best' and then attacking that person. are you two okay? clearly something is wrong with you two. no normal person spends their time like this.

Largest part of tw3 budget was spent on marketing and the hype was in fact everywhere. How mainstream the game became is more important though. Most people never played previous games, or played them after tw3 which is indicative.
Your personal experience is irrelevant as well as your definition of the word 'overrated'

Its been over 4 years since this discussion started. And I feel the tail end of this discussion is not taking that into consideration.

Yeah, it's not some simple Q&A from the OP. This thread doesn't lose its relevance with time.

Just wondering what's a good game to you
Velen's story was fun and exploring also feels more rewarding, but everything changes when you reached novigrad, the main story there is REALLY FCKIN BORING, as priscilla said herself "You need to find dudu in order to find dandelion in order to find ciri, who might not even in novigrad"

and before even reaching that point, you need to find a bunch of people, give them a bunch of favor, basically be an errands boy instead of slaying monsters like you're supposed to do, and the exploring feels terribly boring also since it's almost impossible to get a decent leveled weapon from contracts and looting camps/caves/dungeon anymore

it really is an over glorified game
It's indeed overrated. An okay-ish openworld slasher with some rpg elements, but nothing more. The main story is horrible: First part - 'sorry Mario, your princess is in another castle", the second one - a bunch of cliches. Exploration is even worse: go to a question mark, find a chest, a nest, a village, clear it, repeat 150+ times.
OP, I think you don't like the game. That's fine. I fail, however, to understand why you think it appropriate to offer your tldr appraisal of it's faults vis a vis your expectations. Surely you don't fail to see how self entitled you are.

And Vince, well said.

EDIT: OK, the big joke's on me, I guess ... responding to a 7-yr old post. On the other hand, 7 yrs is like yesterday to me, while for some it's a lifetime.
