Most overrated game in gaming history?
So this is just my opinion. I own the game on GOG, but I thought I would post it here, considering I'm mainly on Steam. This is not meant to flame the 'best game ever created', according to many. It's to criticize the many flaws it has (again, in my opinion), which never seems to be brought up.

- Main story is horrible. 50 Hours of "go here to find Ciri, and get told that she's at the next place'
- Environments/World is extremely repetitive and bland. Including the NPC's. They all look the same. It's like they only created 4 character models, and put different clothing on them. They created 2 different trees and rocks, and put them all over the place.
- Boring quests. Basically glorified fetch quests. They just added some extra steps to or dialogue around them.
- Combat is horrible. I don't even think I need to go into this one.
- Not getting rewarded for exploration. There's not much to find in the giant world. A lot of copy-paste (side quest) stuff, but no interesting secrets.

There are of course some things that I think the game does well, like some of the creative monsters and the graphics. However, this is definitely not a 9 or 10 out of 10 game. A 7 or 8 top.

How many of you actually finished the game? There must be a reason that the majority of players never finished this game, including myself. I actually had a better time playing Dragon Age Inquisition (and finished it), while that had loads of flaws as well (like the horrible, horrible(!) side quests). Dragon Age Inquisition was interesting to explore though and it had something refreshing to offer compared to other RPG's (like judging criminals). You could find many interesting secrets, or the world/environment was just amazing to look at. The main story was a bit cliche, but way more interesting to follow. Why did people put that game down?

This thread will break into drivel fast, so I'll do this quickly for the hell of it:

I have finished the game multiple times and am in the middle of another playthrough at time of writing.

- Main QUESTLINE (as in the game's execution of the quests involved) is pretty meh, I agree with you. I quite like the story itself though.

- I disagree as far as environment goes, nothing else to say here we simply don't see it the same and I can't be bothered to try and change your mind. I agree with NPC's to a point. You've exaggerated a bit, probably for effect.

-Those kinds of quests are there, to say that is all of them though; I disagree.

-The combat serves well enough to move the game. Unless the game pays special attention to its combat (Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, Dynasty Warriors), then most games do combat well enough to serve and that's all. Does that make the Witcher 3 better or worse, not to me. The combat simply is. Also, considering the other 2 games in the series and their combat....LOL W3 did just fine.

-What reward did you want? You don't like the story, or the combat, or the quests. There's nothing to reward someone like you. I found exploring to be worth it in the places I did go.

Ha, in fact this is actually where I'd disagree in the negative where you went positive. This game did nothing to create the monsters. The author of the witcher universe did. They digitized them well, sure, but this is no innovation on the dev's part. The graphics are nice though.

Varying landscapes in comparison to DAI. You completely neglected scope. DAI covers nearly a continent. A great deal of the Witcher 3 takes place on some islands and a wartorn portion of one kingdom (DLC's not included). Heck you arguably see "more" places in W2.

As for why people put DAI down. That's not relevant to W3, and I've no interest in going into it here.

Well about the combat system maybe try this.

I stopped playing Witcher 3 because of it, the combat system is boring but I always liked the rest this game has to offer, so thanks to this mod I can finally enjoy this game after a year.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I guess scope makes sense, but they could've at least added more variety to the world. I just think that if this is the pinnacle of all RPG's for most gamers, without criticizing any of its flaws, then that must be the reason why developers have become so lazy these days. They don't have much to strive for.

I just wrote a review about how overhyped this cringy ♥♥♥♥ is, then saw your post. lol. I honestly think calling this an RPG would insult amazing RPGs that made this genre feel like something, you know. This is something that made for people who like super cool graphics, amazingly cringy super hero characters and a boring console combat system.

I swear the op is me, because everything he said, I have been saying for a while. Yes it is not an RPG, but has RPG elements. And yes it is the most overrated game in history. I don't think anything comes close.

- Environments/World is extremely repetitive and bland.
What?
- Boring quests.
What?
- Combat is horrible.
What?
- Not getting rewarded for exploration.
????????

Did you play the game at all? I agree with you on the story tho, the main story is bad.
I understand why some people are complaining tho, since most people are idiots who just bought the 3rd game first and don't even bother looking into 1 and 2 or the books, that's why so many people are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on BaW.
Oh and those creative monsters you're talking about, they're all from the books, CDPR didn't come up with any of them.

This is another of 1000000 threads here.... it like copy and paste.
What can I say, Its about taste and your game preferences, someone like bananas another ananas...
I Finished this game two times with all DLC's and sidequests and didn't get bored a single time.
If its overrated? maby, I dont realy give damn, never looked up any rewiews and this kind of nonsense, I saw my friend playing and that is all I needed.
if you are bored, well, bed for you, you schould not look up rewiews, just download game and try it out.
I never liked any of DA games, MMO combat is unacceptable for me so that's it...
Go play DAI and have fun...

I didnt like 1 and 2. But 3 blew my mind. The quests and characters are so well written i m amazed. I dont think i ve seen someone do it better and i play pc games since 1989

Well, most of those are subjective opinions, i.e., "The story is horrible / boring quests/ combat is horrible / etc." A lot of people would disagree. And in fact, going straight to terms like "horrible" when describing a successful game makes you lose credibility, seeming less like an honest critic and more like someone interested in generating controversy. You might as well have said "I personally didn't like this game", which is fine. I personally thought Undertale was overrated and had a really obnoxious community, but I don't really interact with them so who cares.

I have to disagree that it is not a role playing game. Role playing game is simply you are playing a role. I am not saying it isn't over hyped. I have no comment on that topic. It is what it is. Lets go down the check list shall we?

Are you playing a role ?

Yes you are. You are playing a main character.

Does the character have a back story?

Yes.

Is there ways to improve this character?

Yes. Levels and points.

Can you make descions on the story and what the character says ?

Yes, You can decide different courses of action through many missions through out the game and dlc. You can decide what kind of person the main character is by your dialoge choices.

Is this a game where you can die and lose the game?

Yes. There fore it is a game.

Is there a overall theme and story ?

Yes of course. That is what makes the game good in my opnion.

You dont think it is a RPG but you just dont think it should be given this title. either way it is an RPG.

Action RPGS are the in thing . That is what this game

I played f4 like 500 hours. Its more rpg'y than witcher 3 since you have more control over who you are and can do your own thing, but man witcher's 3 quests/characters & story is above anything f4 and generally bethesda has to offer.

I agree with you about TW3 but I feel FO4 just has no consequence for any of your actions. TW3 at the very start with the arson and the dwarf quest. When you take him to the dwarf the NPC interacts with his daughter and says "I'll see you soon" etc. it's just incredible how tiny things like that can create such immersive gameplay.

Us nerds like to break things down and talk about whats wrong, or could be better. We argue over superheros and villans in comic books, we debate over how good Star Trek is vs. Star Wars, we occasionally come to agreements on things like Yoda or Spock being awesome, or Jar Jar being the worst character ever made. Thing is, we all are so passionate about our interests that we tend to defend them in arguments like this one here. Witcher is an epic tale and it has a dedicated fanbase of nerds who love it dearly. Some so much that they imagine how it could be better and fight hard with others who are satisfied.

I think the Witcher story is quite engaging and have played through it not being bored once. For me, chasing ciri down while traversing various quests related to an epic war brewing in the land is great fun.

The war makes it interesting, with the Nilfgaard encampment preparing to march north. Radovid in the middle of it all, with Novigrad and Oxenfurt both bristling with life. Beggars, witch hunters, merchants, orphans, everyone talking about the politics. People being burned in pyres as mages attempt to flee persecution.

Puffins, actors, artists, gwent afficianados, all roaming the cities doing what they do. You can take part, enjoy some gambling, fist fight in the taverns, race the city streets for glory. You can even do a bit of acting on stage while hunting for a friend in hiding.

You intervene with gangs controlling the cities, helping to return some peace while searching for clues hidden by spies. You chase down dopplers, succubus, thieves, religious nuts, and even spend a night in a brothel if you like.

The entrances, bridges, and causeways filled with refugees attempting to survive in a war torn land.

I liked being involved in the assasination of a king that influenced the ending in a major way. I enjoyed linking up with old friends throughout the game and calling them to my aid later on. Skellige was a beautiful change of scenery from Velen and I felt like a real outsider while helping the jarls converge to crown a new queen. These people came to my aid in the final battle and it is because of my actions in skellige.

The story is far from "bland" and is actually a bit complex if you enjoy it and dont play the game staring at an xp bar, levels, and question marks on a map. It requires some imagination, immersion, and taking on the persona of Geralt. You have romance, deciet, spying, assasinations, rescues, tournaments, and more.

If you simply play for achievements, and getting to the next thing on the list...youre doing it wrong. Why do you need a reward for traveling through a forest enjoying the scene, killing endregas and bandits?

What need is there for amazing rewards for finding a small town infested with nekkers. You are supposed to be having fun. If you require the cha-ching sound, epic loots, and the rise of an xp bar....youre just playing the wrong game is all.

I could say that Terraria is the most overrated game ever because I dont like it. I could list all the things I think are dumb about it. I could spend two years on their forums trashing it. Thing is, people like it. Its fun for them. So, big deal.

I dont see any real reason to make threads like this unless you are trying to find a way to enjoy it because you really want to enjoy it but cant. Trashing it with opinions stated like facts, saying that its ovverrated is just arguing nerdstyle. Who cares? Go play a game you like.

Im not going around to all the anime sakura porn games and trashing them. I dont need to vent teen angst or look for fights. I game, i love it, and i go to sleep thinkng about what Ill do when i get back to being Geralt.

Meh.. im tired now. Time to dream of stalking through misty groves hunting down leshens and wolves.

This game is outstanding. I love playing it and I dont think it has been misrepresented in any way. Its a classic. Gold. Its not the only one, so stop worrying about it. Find one you love and play it. Dragon Age Inquisition looks awesome and is on my list to play as well.

Its not a 9 or 10? Maybe a 7 or 8? Its not a "true" RPG? Who cares!? People are gaming and love it. What is tbe point of all these threads? Venting? Like debating? Ahh, just being nerds! Right on, Im a nerd too. So you got my opinion.

Game On.

^^ Right on, beautifully said. Unfortunately the people who need to hear this the most will probably ignore it, but what can you do.
