How do you use potions on controller?

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but whenever I use up or down on the d-pad like I'm told, it just uses my food. How do I make it use my potions? I play on blood and broken bones because I'm overconfident and I really need to be able to make use of my Thunderbolt.

my guess you need to move your potion to one of those four quickslots (like on PC) and then you can use it.

I did, and yet the only ways to activate quickslots are up and down on dpad (left and right is for weapons) which ends up using my food which is also in quickslot.

Hold the up or down button to swap between the consumable slots. Press once to use te currently selected item.

You can also adjust your quickslots in the sign menu if you need to take your time during combat
