Does it reduce damage taken from specifc enemy types, or reduce the durability decrese of your weapon when attacking?

Thanks

The blade oils (if that's what you mean by protective coating) increase damage done to specific enemy types.

They don't offer protection or improve durability.

It ups defense against them (slightly different from damage taken for number crunching purposes). I don't think it effects durability as I use it but my silver swords still requires constant repair.

It reduces damage from enemy types targeted by that oil.

Is it worth it though, i'm running light armor on death march and most enemies seem to kill me in 2 - 3 shots anyway if they actually get to hit me

Once you max it out, you get 25% damage reduction.

Yeah, it's worth it.

I've always gone for the don't get hit approach and maximum damage so have never spent a point on this skill.

thanks all.

one more question, if my oil runs out of chages, does the protective coating buff still apply? i havent speced into it yet but on DM enemies take a lot of hits and the oil doesnt last long in a fight.

I'm using the Auto Apply Oils mod, which is kind of a cheat, but for me more just a convenience.

That mod will reapply the oil when charges run out, so...
