Wow Vilgefortz almost killed Geralt 1v1

I was reading some lore and could not believe how strong this guy was, forget about Eredin, Geralt almost died facing this guy (warning long read but very interesting)

Vilgefortz of Roggeveen was a mage and a member of the Chapter of Sorcerers, described by Yennefer as "young" (which, among mages, meant "up to one hundred years"), but "incredibly talented". He is described as being very handsome, tall, well built , highly skilled fighter and possessing a lovely voice.


In the Battle of Sodden Hill, he assumed command over the mages from the Northern Kingdoms. After the battle he engineered the truce between the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire.

In fact, he was not only incredibly ambitious and power-hungry, but also secretly in league with Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard. This had begun many years before the wars, while Emhyr was still hiding under the alias of Duny. Vilgefortz's thirst for unlimited power brought him to the conclusion that he needed Ciri's, Duny's daughter's, blood in order to claim her powers because she is a descendant of Lara Dorren. Using intrigues and his genial intellect, he helped Emhyr rise to the throne. In exchange, Emhyr promised him the North, once it was taken over.

On Thanedd Island, he (among others) was accused of treason and put in dimeritium shackles. However, due to actions of Tissaia de Vries (who was acting only in a manner she considered fair and impartial) he broke free and tried to capture Ciri. During his way, he encountered Geralt. Vilgefortz didn't use magic, instead he attacked Geralt with a staff.
Vilgefortz was honestly the scariest thing Geralt has ever fought. His magic staff somehow made him faster than Geralt, totally removing the big advantage that witchers have over mages. On top of that he was an excellent fighter who has probably has as much combat experience as Geralt. This led to Geralt being caught totally off guard and overwhelmed.(he shattered geralt legg at the end) Vilgefortz easily defeated Geralt, leaving him alive for the beating to be taken as a 'lecture'. He continued tracing Ciri but she fled through the portal in Tor Lara, then the portal exploded and caused him serious wound on his face (he lost one eye)

Afterwards he hid in his castle, continuing his schemes to find and capture the girl, including hiring the bountyhunter Leo Bonhart. He planned to use Ciri's blood and use it on himself. During his search, the spy Dijkistra encountered the horrible experimenrs Vilgefortz has done on girls.

Later, he imprisoned Yennefer and tortured her to retrieve the location of Geralt and Ciri, He then applied dimeritium cuffs to Yennefer to prevent her from escaping and locked her in a cell.

Now this is where it gets interesting:
The assault on Stygga castle was an unprecedented event in the second war with Nilfgaard. There were actually two assaults on the castle. The first by Geralt of Rivia and his company, which was initiated to free Ciri and Yennefer, and the second assault which was undertaken by the Nilfgaardian Empire led by the Emperor himself.

Stygga Castle

The location of the hideout was a classic "lion's jaw". In the mountains, on the north-west of Ebbing province, on a "lakebed" strewn with boulders to be more precise. Stygga castle had many levels, the highest levels were located at the very top of the lakebed and the lowest were built into the rocky cliff wall. The castle was filled with evil, dark and vibrating magic that suppressed any other sources of power, so Ciri was prevented from using her ability to travel through time and space. It also gave its master, Vilgefortz, nearly unlimited power.

Furthermore, the lakebed, were the castle was, was covered with shipwrecks which had been "sucked" there by Vilgerfortz's magic maelstrom in the Sedna Abyss. The location of the hideout was top secret, only imperial coroner, Stefan Skellen, knew of its location as he was cooperating with the Vilgefortz. However, the cover was blown when Geralt of Rivia overheard the name of the castle while investigating some underground caverns at a vineyard in Toussaint. There he overheard Skellen who was meeting with some Nilfgaardian nobles plotting to assassinate the emperor.

Witcher decided to find and attack Vilgefortz himself, but first he sent a message to Dijkstra, containing the name and location of the castle so as to have some sort of backup plan in case of failure. Dijkstra then sent a letter to Emhyr var Emreis, thereby alerting Nilfgaard to the whereabouts of Vilgefortz's hideout. At the time of assault, the castle reinforcements and guard were of considerable size.

The mercenaries guarding it consisted of, Skellen and his own small army, a number of individuals directly loyal to Vilgefortz, the bounty hunter Leo Bonhart and Vilgefortz himself.


The first assault

At the first day of assault, the witcher and his companions arrived to rescue Ciri. The witcher's team had two advantages at their side, one of them was that Ciri had just arrived at Stygga Castle herself before being taken to laboratory. This ensured that everyone in castle was focussed on Ciri, leaving only a small number of guards at the gate. Their second advantage was that Emiel Regis(High Vampire), used his vampire tricks to get them inside with few problems and killing most of the guards except Boreas Mun, who showed them the entrance through which they could reach Ciri.

Later in the of battle, things degenerated into chaotic skirmishes and chases through the castle's labyrinth of hallways. The team split up with Geralt, Cahir, Angoulême and Milva taking a more conventional approach and Regis using his shapeshifting to facilitate a bit of reconnaissance.

Regis managed to find Ciri in the lab and made quick work of Vilgefortz's assistants. In doing so, he broke his long abstinence from drinking blood. Ciri then insisted that he return to Geralt and warn him about Vilgefortz while she set off to find Yennefer. Meanwhile, Geralt and the rest of the team were set upon by arbalesters and pinned down. They ultimately made it through, but Angoulême was wounded and Milva was killed, though they decimated the arbalesters. At that point, Geralt set off in one direction to find either Ciri or Yennefer (hopefully both!) and Cahir and Angoulême set off in another.

The castle guard also split up, with Leo Bonhart setting off alone to find and kill Ciri. Stefan Skellen found most of his men with failing hope, ready to run. He realized that as small groups in a single combat against the witcher's team, they did not have a chance of winning, so he gathered his men and blocked the only exit from the castle, the main hall where a large staircase descended.

Next, two deciding battles occurred: Ciri versus Bonhart, and Geralt, Yennefer and Regis versus Vilgefortz.

As Ciri made her way through the endless corridors searching for Yennefer, she began to despair that she would ever find the sorceress and began calling her name. This alerted Bonhart to her location and he cornered her in a large vaulted chamber with a marble statue of some goddess. Ciri tried to use her teleporting ability to get away, and thought she had succeeded, only to realize that she'd only teleported to the other side of the chamber. Seeing two possible exits, she chose one but ran into Skellen's men and was forced to turn back. Upon re-entering the chamber with the statue, she was faced with her recurring nightmare: the black knight with the winged helmet.

As she was losing hope, she saw a young fair-haired girl behind the knight (Angoulême) and to her great relief, both the knight and the girl started fighting Skellen's men. Once the trio had routed the guards, brief introductions were made and Ciri finally learned Cahir's name, but their acquaintance was short-lived as Bonhard closed in on them. Trying to distract the bounty hunter, Ciri and Cahir pretended that the young knight was in fact "the witcher" in order to scare Bonhart. Bonhart was not entirely convinced and chose to fight Cahir nonetheless while Ciri and Angoulême ran ahead. Though he put up a good fight, Bonhart's skills were superior and Cahir was killed.

As Ciri and Angoulême tried to run, Angoulême's wound slowed their progress and eventually the two were forced to stop. Ciri tried in vain to stop the bleeding and her new-found companion died in her arms. Then Bonhart closed in once again simply stepping over Angoulême's body. He continued menacing Ciri and backed her to the far end of the corridor where she realized they had reached the ruined part of the castle. Most of the floor in the next chamber had collapsed with only a few beams remaining intact. What ensured was a harrowing battle but Ciri was able to use what she had learned at Kaer Morhen from Geralt to finally defeat the bounty hunter.

Meanwhile, Geralt and Yennefer had found Vilgefortz and were busy trying to defeat him. Vilgefortz did not seem to be particularly stressed by their combined assault as he hurled fireball after fireball at them. In fact, he seemed to be gaining the upper hand when Regis arrived on the scene. The vampire's slashed Vilgefortz face below his wounded eye preventing further healing and provided enough distraction for Geralt and Yennefer to gather themselves, but Vilgefortz eventually prevailed and the vampire was "killed" most gruesomely. The battle then continued with the witcher, the sorceress and the mage with Vilgefortz again looking like he would win. Yennefer was seriously wounded and it came down to just the witcher and the mage. With just both men left, Vilgefortz materialised an iron rod to fight Geralt, a melee duel. Vilgefortz attacked Geralt and dominated the Witcher in terms of swordplay and maneuvering, wounding Geralt blow after blow. Geralt mutations prevented him feeling excruciating pain and as Vilgerfortz prepared for the final blow, Geralt managed to cast a high level illusion using Fringilla Vigo's medalion, this caused Vilgefortz to miss his swing,Geralt ceasing this opportunity slashed with tremendous force the surprised mage across the chest shattering his ribs and cutting him almost in half and thus killing Vilgerfortz.

In both duels, Geralt's party triumphed and both Vilgefortz and Bonhart were killed. However, these victories came at a great price. All the witcher's companions were dead, Milva had been shot, Angoulême died from the lance wound to the leg, Cahir was killed by Bonhart while defending Ciri and Emiel Regis was literally melted by Vilgefortz, while the vampire was protecting Yennefer. The only survivors were Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer.

At that point, Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer decided to leave the castle. Yennefer, in particular stated that she simply wanted to see the sky once more (having spent months on end in Vilgefortz's dungeons). However, things were not quite that easy as the trio then encountered the remains of Skellen's men and were forced to fight their way down the main staircase. Side by side, Ciri and Geralt proceeded to kill everyone in their way.

Right but.....geralt has improved very very much......in books geralt was equal to Eskel in sword fight and stuff......And in Witcher 3 eskel lost from Canathir while geralt killed him with summoned goelms.....and imlerith was better than Canathir as well but geralt killed him as well......so geralt has improved so much..

And as for that fight......Geralt killed Vilgefortz in the end no matter what happened and its the rule of fight......The one who survives is winner no matter what

That was when he was fighting a whole village.....not just a normal 1v1 against a kid.......he was facing like hundred of men as far as I remember...

And he has superhuman abilities and stuff but......he is not overpowered like characters in other games......like assassins creed and other games where nobody can touch you as long as you have your hand of counter button ....and that's beauty of Witcher series....a bit of realistic

Geralt was an idiot in Rivia that day. A witcher with around 90 years experience should know that pogroms and battlefields(in general massive battles) are no place for the witcher fighting style. As much as is an impressively effective style, as anything dodge based requires space and predictability regarding on what's surrounding you. That doesn't happen when you are in the middle of a mob, when people move chaotically and they can block or hinder witcher pirouttes.

PD: Coen was another idiot. WTF was doing a witcher in the Battle of Brenna? Another one that didn't understood that witcher sword fighting was created with duels and skirmishes in mind, not massive battles.

Geralt began by trying to save his friends, Zoltan and some other dwarves. It grew and spread as violence erupted in the city. It started off as an argument that got out of hand. It wasn't a planned pogrom. It later became one in which all non-humans became targets of violence.

And he was not alone. Triss and Yen were both with him. Triss Intervened, using magic, bringing down a hailstorm on the crowd, effectively cooling the hot tempers and ceasing the rioting. But the damage was done. Geralt had been impaled and was dying. Yen had tried to save him using her magic and nearly killed herself in the process and that's when Ciri turned up with her unicorn friend and carried them away to a boat.

Wrong.

He was all alone:

-Ciri had a foretelling, probably the same moment when Geralt got pitchforked, but she, Yen and Triss where just entering in Rivia, not with him, who was in the center of the town already. Took time for them to arrive to Geralt due to the pogrom.

-Also Geralt ordered Zoltan and Zigrin to remain hidden inside a tavern, then he rushed out like a berseker and started to wound people(he was intently wounding non-lethally, just to drop people to the knees out of pain and stop the fight). He knew a pogrom had started when he got out of the tavern, noises and that. When he went out the streets were already raging in a big free for all. Protecting his friends(wisely) would mean defend the tavern from inside in case someone came from the outside with assasin intentions, he instead joined the pogrom and faced the consequences, despite his intentions were not killing, but stop the killing spree.


The man who wounded him was not even fighting, a pogrom is not a 1vs1, never, was in the ground helpless and when Geralt passed with his sword by him he begged to be spared. Geralt granted it to him and after he passed the peasant got up and attacked him with the pitchfork, with the "bad luck" that Geralt found himself stuck between people for all sides except from when the attacking peasant came, so he saw him attacking but it was impossible for him to move to dodge, hence the idiocy, he should have foreseen high odds of becoming stuck, which happened after few time since he entered the mob sword in hand.

So, yes. INMO his way of acting was stupid, overall and specially taking in account that minutes before he was talking that now that he reunited again with Ciri and Yen he realized that his life was very dear to him to risk it fighting for money or greater reasons.
