Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middeling...
I guess you all know this sentence. Its mentioned in one of the first trailers.

But what does it actually mean ? Is there some higher moral code behind it ?

It's a quote from the books that goes like this:
"Lesser, greater, middling, it's all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I'm not a pious hermit, I haven't done only good in my life. But if I'm to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all."

It represents Geralt's take on evil as a consequance of his adventures throughout the life as a witcher, and how he prefers to avoid it, because it's just one and the same evil that he would pick. Because it's relative. A lesser evil for a person is a higher evil for another person and vice versa, but picking the lesser evil will affect the other person too, for example. I don't know if that makes sense honestly

It is not behind, it is in plain sight, there is not lesser evil, the definition of the word, evil, it is absolute 'bad', the missing of any 'good', it is like the non sense 101%

After this manifesto it's especially interesting to read short story that shakes it. @OP: check out those two short story books to find out how it happens :)
