Is the crossbow useless?
It does so little damage even with stronger bolts equipped, the only uses i'v found for it is instantly killing underwater Drowners or shooting flying creatures like Wyverns out of the sky but even then you can just wait for them to dive at you and use Aard for the same effect.

Yeah, the crossbow is only useful for utility, not damage. There might be some mods that fix it, but you're better off using Grapeshot or Dancing Star if you need a damaging ranged attack.

I'm not even sure why they bothered to put alternate ammo in for it. Maybe they nerfed it late in development?

Indeed it is. Luckily, there are mods that fix that.

You're in an especially negative mood today, aren't you?

He always is man, he must have little interaction with people so he doesn't know how to interact with people thus all he knows is how to annoy.

Try using the mod that makes crossbows more powerful and the fast and deadly combat mod. With both combined enemies will kill you in 3-4 hits and vice versa.

Its called ranged combat redone. I used Crossbow Damage Boost and Balance but it was incompatible with some mods I have, but if the one I use doesnt work then try giving the second one a go, might work for you.

You don't need a mod. You just need blood and wine. In blood and wine there is a mutagen (from the mutagen tree you get in blood and wine) that makes the crossbow as powerful as other weapons, you just need to make it and equip it. Then enjoy your crossbow build.

That seems kind of unbalanced towards the player considering human enemies have bows.

well the crossbow is the only weapon you can use under water........so it is useful in that respect

The whole series goes against the Witcher lore, because you know, Geralt and Yennefer are still alive. Why not complain about that as well? :steamfacepalm:

The crossbow is meant as a utility and not as your main attack source. That is why it doesn't do much damage. I have used it against archers to stop them from shooting me while I am heading towards them, in addition to the ways you talked about.

They couldnt figure out what Geralt'd do with those drowners and sirens in water so that's their solution :P
