Also, this is a forum, I am free to create a thread to ask for some advices on a specific topic. But you're right, I should have asked on Reddit instead, I'd had more replies I suppose.
Sorry you did not like my answer by the way. Didn't meant to belittle you or anything. No hards feelings.
Light attacks and not much else- Cat gear
Magic and not much else - Griffin Gear
A mix between alchemy and combat - Wolf Gear
Lots of protection and heavy attacks - bear
Alchemy - Manticore
Don't know much about Viper sadly.
You will not find anything that doesn't use adrenaline as that is a very imrporant part of fighting with swords. If you don't want to use adrenaline I guess you should just try and be a mage, but even then adrenaline is useful.
Grandmaster/Master bear is friendly to Quen/Heavy playstyles but even then it just makes you soak a few more hits depending on difficultly. It's more of a playstyle than significant difference really.
NG+ it won't really matter. You can't afford to get hit much even as heavy unless you have legend grandmaster gear.
Viper is pretty much an entire poison set. Not bad when adding poison augs to your weps. I think it gave me around 25-30% poison chance on enemies. Groups go down really fast when everyone takes one hit and slowly keels over.
Don't get hit. This eliminates much of the need for Quen and hence for high Stamina regen.
but then why'd you need any armor :o ... so what's specific about heavy armor here? why not light then?
P.S. You need DLC for this, and a lot of money. So basically you can do it later in the game.
Because you will not always succeed at not getting hit.
Using Quen and avoiding hits are very different play styles. Give the latter a try if you're worried about the slow Stamina regen with heavy armour.
Even with Cat gear, I still avoid getting hit. (Well, try to.) I hardly ever use Quen at all, even against the big guys like elementals and cyclops.
I use sweeping signs, Aard and Quen alternate castings and exploding shield. After a few hits with my sword, I can basically spam these spells and also do other ones, regardless of how much stamina I have. Now because both Aard and Quen are knockdown spells, I use a potion that once I drink it, the special effects of the signs, knockdown in this case, are way more frequent. If the enemy is human sized or a bit bigger, knockdown and instakill. If not, stun and free strikes for me.
So potion, sword, signs, knockdown, dead.
And that's WITHOUT Moreau's mutations. After that, Aard will freeze and Quen will make people explode the more sign intensity I have.
As of "Heavy Armor" I personally advise you to go for witcher gears(with green item backgrounds) as they are exactly what you need and the bonuses are just great.
My favorite Heavy Witcher Gear is
