[SOLVED] "Witcher 3 has stopped working" error on start up screen.
First off I have 100 hours into the game on record, so for the first 100 hours the game was completely fine. Now every time I boot the game up it freezes in the loading screen and an error message pops up. [i.imgur.com]

I'm playing the GOTY edition on a Laptop with the following specs: i7 -6700HQ, GTX 1060, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and the game is installed on a 256GB SSD. I don't play with mods.

I've tried everything from disabling steam overlay, to running it administrator, to re-installing the game, to downloading the latest drivers, to clean installing the Laptop and then re-installing the game.... nothing has worked.

Under Windows Error Reporting I found this:

both of these errors occur when the game fails to launch. Any ideas?

Thank you, I have no knowledge of what any of it means so I appreciate your help. I'll try to make a post on the forum.

You can contact them directly instead of their forums, and that might be the better way to go.
en.cdprojektred.com/support/contacting-support/

Though currently it looks like CD Projekt sites are down, so wait for them to come back up.

Have you checked your anti-virus software? It may be blocking it.

I don't have any anti-virus installed aside from Windows Defender and that never gave me anyproblems.

Since it is a laptop, check, just to be sure, that it's using the graphics card to run the game and not the onboard graphics.

Ive checked the nvidia control panel, its all good there.

One last thing: what OS are you running? If Windows 10, I've heard that quite a few people have been having issues with the Creators Update. If you installed that, you might want to try rolling it back.

Yes I am running Windows 10... coincidently I started having problems right around the time of the update. That might just be the issue.

As stated above, tech support is rather iffy at present since CDPR is no longer working on or supporting the game. They've moved on to other projects.

This type of issue, however, has been with the game, in one form or another, since patch 1.03.

But recently, Windows 10 users have been complaining about it again right after the Creators Update so that's a place to start at least.

CD Projekt still supports the game throught their customer service contacts. They don't pay much attention to the forums, but when contacting them directly through the customer service contacts they still provide support.

Despite you thinking otherwise, not every problem with the game has anything to do with the game itself and can be fixed without a patch. Most problems can be fixed without a patch.

I HAVE FOUND THE ISSUE

The problem was in fact the Creators update. I browsed a previous thread and found this:

The Creators update introduces Game Mode and Game Bar as windows features.

Game bar is enabled by default along with it's extra options. This currently causes Witcher 3 to crash on startup if you have an nvidia card and fast v-sync enabled.

To solve this you have to disable the "Fullscreen Support for MS verified titles" option in the game bar settings. Or choose another VSync mode. The same feature seems to cause issues in other games aswell so best to leave it off..

Otherwise my transition to Creator update was unproblematic. Didn't have to reinstall any drivers (though i updated geforce drivers aswell) and everything seems to run normally so far.

As soon as I read this I went into Settings> Gaming> Game bar and unchecked "Show Game bar when I play full screen games Microsoft has verified" and launched TW3. Suprise, surpise. The game works again!

Not only that, having the setting checked made Rocket League more stuttery so that is also preforming better now.

Thank you all for your support, I really appreciate. Best of luck and happy gaming. :steamhappy:

so win 10 vs nvidia drivers vs TW3. luckily or unluckily first two of those still evolving. one's even forcefully unless you've enterprise version :/

Plz append [SOLVED] to title.
