Game Save Failed, Not Enough Storage Space Available
Hi all,

I just completed a relatively hard boss (new to the game, lvl 1, etc..) and I'm unable to save.
"Game Save Failed. Not Enough Storage Space Available" keeps coming up.

I have verified the game cache and even deleted old saves to try and stop this from happening but it continues to happen. I have over 90GB of free space on my hard drive so I have no idea what's going on. It affects my Manual, Auto and Quick-saving

I love the game so far but I'll have to stop playing it completely if it can't save at all.

Is there any fix to this?

Have you got Steam Cloud turned on? I had this in Witcher 2 when my Steam Cloud storage was full for the game even though I had heaps of space left on my hard drive. I had to delete loads of saves in game then exit the game to let the cloud sync and remove the saves in the cloud too. Ended up turning it off.

I did not delete saves directly in the cloud storage, I said that I deleted them in game which meant that I deleted them off my hard drive. Exiting the game meant that the cloud synced (as you said it mirrors what is on your PC) and removed the saves from the storage. I know that it was full before this as looking at the updates tab under the steam properties gives the space used out of the space available. After deleting the saves and allowing it to sync after exiting the game freed some space and I could save again. So many saves to delete in game though made it easier to turn off. Problem solved. Of course that may not be the same problem for the OP.

Doesn't hurt to check in properties (on the Updates tab where you turn on and off Steam Cloud) to see if there is still space in the cloud or if that is full.

I turned off that option and it's still unable to save. It had 1.24mb/980~mb used though, so that wasn't the problem.

No idea, sorry. I did a little researching on Google but couldn't come up with anything useful.

Have you check the folder's attributes? It might be set to read-only which would prevent anything being saved to it.

Saves are normally kept in:

C:/Users/"your name"/My Documents/The Witcher 3/gamesaves

If you have the game installed on a different letter drive, just go there and search for it. Then right-click on "gamesave" folder and select Properties. See if the Read-only box is ticked. If it is, untick then exit.

Have you tried running the game directly from a shortcut to the .exe instead of through Steam? It's DRIM-free and does not need the client to run. See if you can save that way.

Good luck.

I've checked and deleted a few of my gamesaves and they all seem to be fine. Nothing is on 'read-only'. What confuses me most is sometimes the game will let me save and sometimes it won't. I'll try running it directly from the .exe file and see if that affects anything.

any mods?

or if you've multiple partitions ("drive letters") could it be that one's near full even if other has 90 GB free?

Mine started to work again. I never figured out what the problem was but I found a "solution". All you have to do is keep playing, or move somewhere else, then it'll let you save. Well, that's how I fixed it anyway.

Your gamesaves should be automatically saved to your C: drive no matter which drive you installed your game on - you can find them in C:\Users\[your user]\Documents\The Witcher 3\gamesaves - and to make space for new saves you must clear up space on your C: drive. Then you should be able to save again. At least that's what worked for me.

same issue here in 2020 and I have over a TB of free space, just brilliant. MIght try to launch the game as an admin see what that does. I have lost 4 hours of gameplay :-(

You might also want to see if you have any ransomware protection running. Windows recently started giving you some protection by default, and I'd guess that is what is interfering. If so, you'll need to allow this executable to write data.

You should never lose 4 hours of game play. This is why you save often so you can detect any issues. The game even warns you to save frequently because you can die at any time.

So you are saying you went 4 hours without attempting to save?

yup, I bough the game because it was on sale and I thought I gonna give it a try. Well, the game is brilliant so instead of playing an hour I stuck in for four hours. Its good and bad in different ways. The game is lovely. Anyways no regrets of buying it I just need solve this issue. I have tried various suggestions from steam and witcher forums from admin rights, registry tweaks, firewall, etc no success. The most annoying thing is that the devs refuse to reply

so look in folder
Documents\The WItcher 3
should contain two files input.settings and user.settings
and a gamesaves folder. that folder should contain
autosaves, checkpoint saves, and manualsaves

if files/folders are missing, you STILL have a permission problem.
check windows security/controlled folder access. if on, add exemptions for steam/game.

neither steam nor game installers bypass whatever security you set up on your pc.

Sounds like you tried everything except controlled folder access.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/microsoft-defender-atp/evaluate-controlled-folder-access

I am going to take a guess that you don't use a 3rd party AV, and hence Windows Defender is the security provider and therefore you have controlled folder access on. Or, you do use a 3rd party security provider and it has a similar feature.

this is so weird, all right I have installed like 25 games in total, but I do not have a documents/Witcher folder anywhere but in steams. Not in the documents or games nowhere to be found. just wow. I have all the other games from ARMA, Halo, etc but no witcher at all.
added witcher to the exceptions will give it a try

the folder was read only so I have changed it.
