Edit: Should also mention that the Hide skill has a chance to fail, but the spell does not.
2. Your "attack" command replaced with "backstab" or something like that. And yes, it's more effective.
It's true for "common" units (i.e. under Bulafei). Thief skills gives much better chance to be hidden, and it's possible that high-level thieves will not be found at all.
But thief skills works as counter to hiding too. So if you have thief in party, you have much better chances to find hidden enemy, and with high level thief no enemy can hide more than one turn. Same thing works against you: if your enemy can hide without spells, they can find your hidden characters as well.
Technically even your correction isn't entirely right. Hidden characters will still be effected by party wide buffs/debuffs, for example. There are so many exceptions to the rules in this game it's enough to make anyone's head spin! We could probably go back and forth like this forever.
Haha.
I thought that is what I said above so I don't see the correction, but I apologize if it did not come across and thank you for putting it in a different way that may be easier to understand. The attack command's text is replaced with "Surprise Attack," if that is important to anyone.
Edit: I suppose while we are being extremely thorough it should be mentioned that you can also cancel hidden status with the Ramialf spell, which is very useful if you are up against a hidden enemy and you don't want to rely on level difference + Thief Skills (Rank) + RNG to get them out of it. It does wipe all buffs/debuffs/counters for both sides though, so it has its downside.
Yes, it was my intention. Because "Attack" and "Surprise attack" looks not identical for me, so mention about "attack command" could be confusing. Sorry if it was obsolete reply.
So pick away! The more information out there, the better.
