Stealth and hidden stashes
Does having a high stealth character affect him finding those hidden purple stashes?

No - having a high mechanics skill does.

Stealth: moving unseen
Mechanics: finding the unseen

Two separate things though you need to be IN Scouting/Stealth mode to find them.

Actually since 1.05 you can find them even outside of stealth mode if the required mechanics level is at least 4 lower than your actual level. Same with traps. In practice this won't come up much so you'll generally want to be in stealth mode anyway but it is possible.

High Mechanics for finding hidden objects and Stealth gets you close to enemy

Mechanics allows you to see hidden caches. Perception determines from how far away you can see them. I.E. Don't put your high mechanics on a character with 3 perception.

I know of no tool tip, mined evidence, or empirical experience that suggests perception helps the range at which you see things. The spotting range, in my experience, seems to grow as my mechanics skill does. Conversely, I know of nothing that says perception does not help. If you can provide something that I can repeat that will demonstrate the influence of perception?
