Best race/class combo for a new player?
Hello, Im new to the game and the genre of old school D&D style RPGs actually. Looking for a bit of guidance on what is fun and at least viable to play, leave all the suggestions you want :-)

Story wise I think Cipher is the best class, it seems to make the most sense with the plot. Race wise I might prefer a god-like only because there aren't many around.

for class, fighter is solid choice for melee n tanker, for caster cipher is also quite easy to use
for race, moon godlike, wood elf (ranged char), both orlan type

Depends what you want to do. Honestly I roll a tank Fighter as the simplest one to deal with. If you want a character that's fairly survivable I'd go with a Wild Orlan Fighter.
Might: 2
Constitution: 15
Dexterity: 18
Perception: 20(21 when from The White That Wends origin)
Intelligence: 3
Resolve: 19
Background: Laborer

Sure your damage is gonna be a little less than most(-24% damage is like, 1-2 damage difference) but with high PER and RES your deflection is gonna be very high and you'll interrupt often. Find a Hand Axe or any other weapon with the Interfernce trait and the best shield you can to boost your Deflection and stick with Talents that boost your Deflection.

The extra Mechanics will let you find something you can sell to Hoeden early on and let you pick up a Brigandine(great DR). You'll take very little damage with constant grazes and the high Dexterity will help offset the Recovery penalty of heavy armor.

Fighter if you want to be the tank. Otakon17's advice is solid.
Barb if you want to be a Melee damage dealer.
Priest if you want more roleplaying options and play support.
Ranger, Cipher or Chanter is also solid options.

Note: I felt I was missing out on not playing a priest or cipher from a roleplaying perspective, may take this into account aswell.

Tanks generally like resolve, intelligence and perception and those play a role in a lot of conversation options so that is another benefit of making your main character a meat shield.

personal preference mostly.

though I think the ranger, fighter and barbarian are a tad boring as a main for a first time player. (also possibly paladin)

I like the chanter, wizard, druid and cipher the most, because they have a large array of abilities and diversity. Also chanter summons are great offtanks and lifesavers. (phantom and later ones)

Why INT? At least for a Fighter, they don't really need it and the bonus from Resolve negate it almost entirely.

I'm playing Pale Elf Rogue as my first char about half way through Act 3 now and he's pretty beastly
