An error occured while updating pillars of eternity (disk read error) - patch 1.03
anyone else? tried verifying files, it started redownloading the 1.03 patch, and I got (disk read error) again

edit: problem solved! it was because i had the game files on D: SSD connected to the original folder on E: hdd, and the update kept failing, i got rid of the symbolic link and copied the game files back to the HDD and the update went through as normal

I got the idea from this thread, apparently sometimes patching games via steam has problem with symbolic links??

Ok, I can confirm (at least for my scenario) that having your steam library accessed via symbolic link DOES interfere.

Yesterday I moved my steam library and deleted the symbolic link, and what do you know - Civ V finally completed it's update!

Not sure why this issue has suddenly cropped up - it's been working fine for years lol

Cheers to ryarbrou for the idea :D

could be your drive having a problem, do you have another drive to install the game too?
well i just ran chkdsk for several hours and it says the drive is fine, still having a problem, could it be because i am using symbolic link from my steam directory (hdd) to pillars directory (ssd)?

I had the same problem. I had to unistall, restart my computer and download the whole game again to work.

were you using the mklink /j command to create symbolic links? somehow getting rid of that allowed me to patch the game successfully, which is really strange, first game I ever had a problem with symlink

No, I installed normally, without any symbolic links. After I uninstalled the game, it started giving me the error for the install of the whole game. After I restarted my computer it worked normally.

First time this kind of problem ever ocurred to me too.

Edit: I forgot, for the install of the whole game, it was giving me the message that I did not had space in my HD (I had almost 300GB free space). Really odd.

I can conform this: Using e.g. "Steammover" to move the files to your SSD causes this bug. Had to move the files back to original Steam folder to install the patch.
