Does POE Have an Open World?
I have been interested in this for quite some time now. However, does POE have a fairly decent open world, or is it pretty linear?

The story is linear and certain areas are high level, so you can't go there without getting smashed. So while technically it is open world and free roam, do so at your own risk, you are liable to get slaughtered. I.E, follow the main story or die...but you are free to wander and explore.

Setting it to easy mode and running with a full party (six) can alleviate most of the difficulty issues, but yeah, there are some areas not accessible until the main story is progressed, which is pretty linear.

It's not an open world in the typical sense. Like BG, it's separated into areas.

The story is linear but you can go anywhere as long as you can keep yourself alive. Which isn't anywhere lol. Anyway, once you get your stuff together and a party you can choose you side quests in any order and go here and there completing them discovering more places in the process. It is kind of in the middle. Like a top down Witcher game almost. Combat is completely different though and this game has more dialogue options that the Witcher did by far.

Heh, that makes sense, as Witcher 1 used the Aurora Engine (Neverwinter Nights 1&2), which was the successor to the Infinity Engine (BG), which this game is an homage to.

Thanks for the replies. A semi-open world seems pretty decent. I guess I'll have to open up the wallet and give this game a try. I love the art style!

It is not open world. It has sandbox areas. You do get a loading screen every time you go from map A to map B etc.
Similar system to Dragon Age: Origins or Borderlands.

Open world would mean there's one big map.

I don't mind areas. I guess basically what I don’t want is a point a to point b to point c like game. I like exploring different areas and running into danger, kind of like Ultima Online. You just run out into the world and encounter some monster and then you fight for your life, the whole thrill of danger. You think this is kind of similar, but instead just seperated by areas instead of one big map?

it follows the standard linear metaplot with subquests you can attend to at leisure.

I forgot about that. Proper reference after all.

"encounter some monster and then you fight for your life, the whole thrill of danger. "

This part can be very true. You don't have to play the game in a specific order, per se, you can go explore harder areas. You might live, or you might get curb-stomped by a group of ogres.

Or you might be even be in an easy area and stumble across a certain cave, and think 'hmm, I wonder what's inside?'.
You don't want to be in that cave.

It has an immersive world

Yeah, that kind of stuff is what I'm looking for. If you make it, you are rewarded. If you don't, consequences, but you get the choice whenever you want.

Yea...that seems to be true. Pushing through new areas and taking on new enemies is very thrilling. There is a real sense of adventure in the game that is hard to describe. The world has sections and loading screens but that doesnt' really pull me out of it. It is a lot of fun seeing what is around the next corner.

Nice, I am sold. I don't mind loading screens myself, but if the danger is there and you got some freedom of exploration that's what is important to me. Thinking back... Ultima VII: Serpent Isle had a semi closed world but you still had that bit of exploration and danger to run into. How is the loot in the game? Any good loot?
