Custom formations, how do they work?

I press F, and I can set some custom formations but this doesn't seem to take effect at all!

I feel like I'm missing something clearly but the formation of my party is based strictly on the order on the bottom left of the screen, and goes in a 3x2 grid (first 2 in front, next 2 middle, last 2 behind).

How do you get the custom formation to actually take effect?

I think it is a right click to open the interface, and then you move character portraits to the locations you want them to be in. It is really very flexible and allows for space between characters if that is what you want. There are two custom formations available...

Try pressing the formation button on the menu at the bottom of the screen.

You'll see a range of formations to choose from, and you can select (and edit) your custom formations from there.

If you have problems with them filling out the formation correctly keep in mind that the order of there portraits has an effect on this also

Just want to say thanks for this. This fixed the issues I was having with custom formation not working.
